With help from "business consultant" Louis, Jessica lands her dream job as dean of a private school, but is dismayed to learn that she was a diversity hire with no real authority. After being scouted as a "Mathlete" by his brothers' high school, Evan wants to spend more time with his brothers there, and has to learn that it's okay to have separate interests.
- Authority in Name Only: After getting the job as dean of a private school, Jessica quickly learns that the school's headmaster already covers what she thought her duties would be, and she's solely there so they could put her face on a brochure and call the school the "Home of Diversity". However, by the end of the episode, Jessica has found a way to grant herself authority that can't easily be revoked without causing a scandal.
- Double-Meaning Title: While Jessica wants "a seat at the table", as in being treated equally to her new coworkers, Evan envisions himself sharing the same cafeteria table as his brothers after their high school scouts him for their Mathletes team.
- Free the Frogs: At first, the sole duty that Jessica is given is taking care of Mr. Buns, a rabbit that was meant to be dissected by the tenth grade class that they didn't have the heart to kill.
- Glad I Thought of It: Jessica almost gives up trying to enact any meaningful change at the private school when one of her ideas is shot down, only for a Caucasian teacher to suggest the exact same idea a literal second later and get applauded for it.
- Gretzky Has the Ball: Jessica and Louis go golfing with Deirdre from the HOA, despite Jessica's past rudeness to her, as Deirdre can get them an interview with a private school that's looking for a new dean. The position is secure before the game even starts, and Jessica proclaims victory by picking up the golf ball, throwing it across the field, and calling it a home run.
- Hypocritical Humor: When Louis is surprised (and a little disappointed) that Jessica convinced Deirdre to get her an interview at the school so quickly and without his help, Jessica says that she's just good at everything she does...and then the Gretzky Has the Ball moment occurs.
- Imagine Spot:
- Evan has one of all three Huang brothers attending high school together, with girls fawning over him and Trent acting as his bouncer as he eats lunch with Eddie and Emery in the cafeteria.
- Jessica, upon first learning she's an Authority in Name Only, imagines herself strangling the principal before getting snapped out of her daydream by him asking if she has any further questions about her lack-of-duties.
- Malaproper: According to a conversation between Evan and Eddie, Louis occasionally mangles common idioms, such as "Brothers are thicker than water" and "Cut me some slacks". A later conversation between him and Jessica has him mangle some more while giving her career advice, such as "Rome took a while". And then in The Tag, while Eddie's still confused over the words Pie and Pi from crashing Evan's Mathletes group, Louis claims that "Pie in the sky" is a mistake and that it's supposed to be "Pie in this guy" because you eat pies.
- Mistaken for Racist: Jessica finally gets a chance to turn the tables and gain prominence at the private school after she's asked for help improving their image after an incident involving the marching band wearing white sheets (as the school's mascot is a ghost) and saluting veterans in the audience is mistaken for support of The Klan.
- Slave to PR: After being asked to fix the Mistaken for Racist incident, Jessica arranges a press conference, and then takes command of it from the principal while Louis, planted as one of the reporters in the audience, starts asking questions about her upcoming duties and raise in salary that the school will be unable to easily repeal now that there's going to be a public record.
- A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After Evan's attempt to force his brothers to interact during lunch break backfires spectacularly, with Eddie considering himself too cool to be comfortable with Emery's theatre friends and Emery taking it as an insult while also calling Eddie's gang a bunch of freaks in retaliation, the boys get revenge on Evan by crashing his Mathletes group. Evan's infuriation at their wrong answers is what helps him realize they had a point and it's sometimes best to not involve each other in everything.
- Team Pet: In The Tag, Jessica introduces the family to Mr. Buns and announces that she's promoted him to her assistant at the school, with Louis glad that the cute "Mr. Buns" Jessica had told him about is just a rabbit.
- Title Drop: After being dismissed by her coworkers but given the opportunity to take control of the situation after the Mistaken for Racist incident, Jessica insists that she needs "a seat at the table" where the school's staff meetings are held instead of giving up and seeking work elsewhere in order to set a precedent and make sure that future minority employees will be treated equally and fairly.
