Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 19 Vice Mommy

Go To

With Jessica attending university classes to become a school administrator after the events of "Rancho Contendo", Evan becomes the Vice Mommy, in charge of maintaining the household when she's absent. Eddie becomes bothered when Louis gives him special treatment while working at Cattleman's Ranch.

  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • Eddie's wish to be shown less favoritism while working for his dad ends up backfiring when he uses Cattleman's kitchen to prepare a meal for Tina (because Evan was using the home kitchen to cook a fancy meal and help Jessica impress her teachers) and Louis interrupts the date to punish him for breaking regulations.
    • Evan takes on the position of Vice Mommy in order to help Jessica have more free time to spend with him, and then helps her befriend her university instructor and her TA when she seems distracted by school, only for Jessica to spend her free time with the teachers after-hours instead of spending the time with Evan. Later, he lets Grandma throw her Wild Teen Party to get Jessica's attention, only for Jessica to nearly fire him from the Vice Mommy position because of it.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: Soon after making Eddie Employee of the Month, Louis sets up a collage of Eddie's old baby photos at Cattleman's as part of a going-away party (for Eddie's upcoming trip to Taiwan), which only increases Eddie's fear that he's getting special treatment as the boss' son.
  • Employee of the Month: Eddie receiving this award at the start of his plotline, particularly when Hector makes a comment about how nice it must be to be the boss' son, is his indication that Nepotism is starting to take effect.
  • Nepotism: Eddie wants to be treated as just an employee while working at Cattleman's, and not get special treatment from his dad, but Louis struggles to avoid showing his love and takes it as an insult when Eddie asks him to separate his "boss life" from his "dad life". A conversation with Trent towards the end of the plotline has Eddie realize that Louis treats all of his employees like family, hosting embarrassing celebrations included, and Eddie apologizes for resisting it.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: At the start of the episode, the rest of the family is confused why Jessica's appointing Evan as "Vice Mommy" instead of putting Louis in charge. When Louis asks if it's due to him already being busy managing Cattleman's, Jessica unconvincingly states that's exactly why, leaving Louis with an unsatisfied expression on his face.
  • Teacher's Pet: After receiving a B Grade in class, Jessica's seen gifting an entire month's worth of apples to her instructor and laughing at her lame jokes, while reminding her to remember how keen and friendly she's being the next time an assignment is handed out.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Evan's excited to become the Vice Mommy and make sure Jessica doesn't have to do any additional work when she comes home in the hopes of spending more personal time with her, but Jessica's so focused on her studies that she still doesn't give him her full attention. He then refocuses into helping Jessica impress her teachers, but she'd still rather be a Teacher's Pet than let him distract from her studies. After the Wild Teen Party and nearly firing Evan for letting Grandma throw it, she admits that she's been overly focused on school due to it being a major change in her life, but she will focus more on listening to his reports from now on.
  • Wild Teen Party: Grandma wants to throw one of these (minus the "teen") while Jessica is busy with her studies, and when Evan worries that Jessica is too focused on her school life to spend time with him, she convinces Evan to let her go through with it in order to get Jessica refocused on her home life.
