Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 4 E 19 King In The North

Go To

Honey plans a relaxing vacation before her baby arrives, but Jessica turns the trip into a quest to get Stephen King to endorse her novel. Louis scrambles to make Grandma Huang feel welcome when she considers moving into an apartment of her own, with Evan and Emery worried that they'll be forced to sleep in separate rooms if Grandma moves out. Eddie and Nicole rebel against the school's dress code.

  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: After Honey's "The Reason You Suck" Speech at Jessica, the Non-Ironic Clown offers to let the girls tag along to the bowling game that he and Stephen King are both going to be at, but Jessica refuses in order to be with Honey and her family in their times of need.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Jessica almost realizes what a bad friend she's being to Honey when her pursuit of Stephen King causes her labor pains and leads to her being rushed to the hospital, so she offers to make up for it with blueberry pancakes...that Honey can eat in the car while they continue their pursuit. Honey immediately locks her out of the hospital room and later gives Jessica a stern lecture on how her determination can be a major flaw.
  • Melancholy Musical Number: Right in the middle of the episode, Evan, Emery, and Louis all look out of a house window and start singing "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt (the boys upset at being separated from each other, and Louis upset at being separated from his mother), before Louis notices the boys and stops singing to tell them it's past their bedtimes.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: While on their search for Stephen King, Jessica and Honey get startled by one, who fails to realize that his lack of personal space leans into Monster Clown territory and claims King wrote a book inspired by him but he hasn't actually read it because he's easily spooked.
  • Quote Mine: Not only does Jessica fail to meet Stephen King, she ends up getting a restraining letter from him for bothering so many of his friends and desecrating his deceased pet's grave, a line of which has Stephen refer to her as "scarier than any character [he] could ever write [himself]"...which is, of course, the line Jessica uses as endorsement for her book, recontextualizing it to refer to her skill at writing a suspenseful mystery.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Jessica states that she sees Jack as someone to emulate, Honey notes how Jessica's been ignoring both Honey's needs and the phone calls from Louis asking for help with Grandma, and then compares Jack's alcoholism consuming him and his subsequent breakdown to Jessica being consumed by her book and her mad, unhealthy persistence to track down Stephen King.
  • Rooting for the Empire: In-Universe, Jessica believes that Jack from The Shining is someone worthy of emulating, admiring his drive to work on his on writing; when Honey points out that it leads to chasing his family with an axe, Jessica just points out that it was a mallet in the original novel. It becomes a Plot Parallel with Honey's "The Reason You Suck" Speech right after.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Eddie and Nicole's ultimate display of rebellion is to exchange bottomwear for the school dance, Nicole arriving in dress pants and Eddie in a skirt. Although they aren't even allowed into the dance to make their statement, they do still get some respect from a couple of passing-by teenage girls.
