Recap / Frasier S 05 E 04 The Kid

Go To

Roz introduces Frasier to the father of her child, a young man who is "7" years younger than her.

Tropes:

  • Age-Gap Romance: Parodied. Roz, 33, had a fling with college student who was 19 at the time. She claims she is only 7 years older than him. Frasier of course doesn't believe that.
  • Bluff the Imposter: Roz tells Frasier the father is an "architect" who "moved to Cairo". Later that evening she tells Martin, Niles and Daphne that the father was an "archaeologist". Frasier picks up on the inconsistency straight away.
Frasier: You know, this morning you told me the father was an architect.
Roz: I did? Oh, that was a slip of the tongue.
Frasier: Ah. And, uh, how did you two meet again?
    Roz: In a bar.
Frasier: This morning you told me it was on a double-date.
Roz: Oh, that's right, it was! It was on a double-date.
Frasier: This morning you told me nothing!
  • Elephant in the Living Room: Just before Roz arrives, Frasier tells Martin, Niles and Daphne not to discuss the baby unless Roz herself brings up the subject. When she enters, there is an awkward silence before the four of them until this:
    [After several seconds of silence...]
Roz: I got some interesting news! Well, last night, I β€” and a large portion of Seattle β€” found out I was pregnant! Don't you guys want to ask me about it?
Daphne: Sure, we all do! But we were told not to.
Martin: Yeah, Frasier's afraid we might say something to make you uncomfortable.
Roz: Oh, that's silly. I want to talk about it.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Niles tries to do this, walking into the kitchen twice whilst Frasier and Roz are talking about the baby's father. He claims he was just grabbing a bottle of wine, and then a corkscrew, causing Frasier to apologise for accusing him of eavesdropping. Niles then rejoins Daphne and Martin in the living room.
Niles: All I could get was that she hasn't told the father yet.
  • Give the Baby a Father: Niles apologizes for his behavior in the previous episode, where he drunkenly proposed to Daphne believing she was the one pregnant. He says it’s the honorable thing for a man to do when a woman is going through such a situation; Daphne points out that Roz really is going through such a situation and Niles quickly changes the subject.
  • Grammar Nazi: Martin notices that someone has been correcting the spelling and grammar of the graffiti in the restrooms at Cafe Nervosa with a red pen.
Martin: It was Niles, wasn't it?
Frasier: I'll talk to him again.
  • Honorable Marriage Proposal: After learning about the pregnancy Rick proposes to Roz so they can be a family. Roz gently turns him down because they're not in love. She assures him that she can handle raising the baby by herself and that he should enjoy his early twenties to their fullest.
  • Making Room for Baby: Roz mentions that she's going to need to move to a bigger place as her studio apartment isn't suitable for raising a baby.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Roz and Rick went out more than once, but only a handful of times and they parted on good terms. Then Roz found out she was pregnant...
  • Pillow Pregnancy: Parodied during the tag. Roz really is pregnant, but not showing yet. So she stuffs pillows up her top to see what she will look like when she is showing later down the line.
  • Stigmatic Pregnancy Euphemism: Not used, as it's the 1990s and Roz has no reason to hide that she's pregnant, but Martin muses on how often this happened when he was younger.
Martin: Boy, things have really changed since my day. Back then, if a girl got in trouble, her family would send her away to relatives in another state, and if anybody asked, just lied and said she went to Europe. Then when she came back, they'd raise the baby as a little sister. Not like today β€” we had morals and values back then.
  • You Are Not Alone: When the full weight of being a single mother hits her Roz breaks down and asks Frasier how she's supposed to do this alone. He assures her she won't be, because she has him.
