Recap / Final Space S 3 E 6 Change Is Gonna Come

Go To

Gary and the crew rush to save Quinn from her Final Space poisoning. Meanwhile, Ash goes to confront Invictus while Tribore and his son are informed of a prophecy concerning them.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Act of True Love: Without hesitation, Gary agrees to have his pain receptors fused with Quinn so the love of his life can survive the selenium implant to curb her Final Space poisoning, even if that means feeling the full extent of her own physical agony.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Gary bonks Quinn's head against the sensor while hastily laying her down on the medbay, she jestingly asks if he's trying to kill her. Gary initially goes Dude, Not Funny! before admitting that actually was a pretty good one.
  • Breather Episode: Olan Rogers considers this one as such, considering it's a smaller, more self-contained conflict in which the crew seeks a way to save Quinn from her poisoning, in addition to the more comedic C-plot where Tribore and Quatro look into a prophecy spoken by a deceased drunkard. However, the foreboding B-plot with Ash going to hear from Invictus and being granted a power-boosting transformation and a warning about Gary in turn, combined with the harrowing sequence of Gary experiencing all of Quinn's pain while the selenium implant is installed unto her brain, helps ensure it's still far from a slouch.
  • The Chosen One: According to prophecy revealed by an oracle named Tim Belts, Tribore and/or his son Quatronostro are destined to save those stranded in Final Space, and bring them back to the normal universe.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Tribore asks whether he or Quatronostro is destined to save those stranded in the Final Space, Tim Belts answers with a simple "Yes", implying they're both the prophesized saviors. Tribore being, well...Tribore, he fails to understand and thinks Tim is screwing with him.
  • Deal with the Devil: Invictus gives Ash three days to decide either to join him or remain with Gary and the crew.
  • Mathematician's Answer: When asked whether Tribore or Quatronostro is the destined savior of those stranded in Final Space, Tim Belts answers with a simple "Yes". This confuses the hell out of Tribore, who fails to realize it means they're both the chosen ones.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: HUE feels some regret at withholding information about Quinn's condition from Gary.
  • No Man Should Have This Power: Ash is quite aghast at the power boost bestowed to her, which isn't helped by her already having made clear her disdain for her powers to begin with.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Invictus tries to paint himself as this and tells Ash that Gary will be the one responsible for Fox's death.
  • She's All Grown Up: After making the deal with Invictus, Ash's body ages to that of a young adult.
  • Unobtainium: The material shown in this episode has the ability to absorb even final space poisoning, explaining how Kevin Van Newton survived this long.
  • Wham Episode:
    • In order to save Quinn, the crew would have to essentially transform her into Nightfall. It would also require Gary to share some of her pain in order for the transfer to work.
    • Due to Invictus' influence, Ash receives a different uniform, hairstyle and second eye. More than that, she also ages into an adult form.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Spoken word for word by Tribore when he keeps shooting at the leader of invading insectoid aliens, who simply carries on and converses with him like nothing happened, despite being riddled with bleeding holes in his chest.
