Recap / Final Space S 2 E 3 The Grand Surrender

Go To

Ash's homeplanet turns out to be the Team's next destination when they believe that an eldritch Serpent God inhabiting that place holds a useful tool to get to Quinn, while Ash is haunted by her past.

Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Ash, revealing her backstory on Serepentis and her desire to find her lost sister, Harp.
  • Animalistic Abomination: The Serpent God has fire powers, speaks through telepathy and has a dimensional gem as its heart.
  • Alien Blood:
    • Clarence bleeds magenta when Nightfall shoots his fingers off. They grow back instantly, though.
    • Serepentians have dull-yellowy blood, as shown when the cultists fling themselves off a cliff.
    • Septim the Heart Keeper has green blood
    • The alien groom has orange blood
  • All for Nothing:
    • Ash has been hoping for the day she would return home and rescue her sister Harp from Werthrent. Unfortunately, while Harp is alive, she has gone mad. With Werthrent killed by the end, Harp and the other worshipers that have become "Surrendered" die with him.
    • Fox's attempts to encourage the alien groom to go to his own wedding amount to this when he dies falling from the ship.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: One of the endlessly-suffering zombies inside Werthrent's stomach is a cat. Thank God the Team Squad wiped that bastard snake off the face of Serepentis when they did.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Werthrent is vanquished and the crew has attained the dimensional key from within his body, but Ash fails to save her sister from his clutches. Also, the groom that stowed away on the Crimson Light dies right as he reaches his wedding.
  • Chekhov's Gun: KVN obsesses over having a forever-ball. He eventually gets one and plays with it constantly in the background. When he fails to answer the final riddle he throws it in frustration and it bounces all over the old guardian, killing him and allowing the others to get the Dimensional Key.
  • Death by Falling Over: This tropes come into play when Fox accidentally pushing the alien groom off the Crimson Light (While it was 100 miles above the ground) without a parachute, which then enter Black Comedy territory when the groom smashes into the ground and splatters all over the woman he intends to marry.
  • Eat Me: The protagonists allow themselves to get eaten by Werthrent, since the key they seek is inside him. For many years, loyal worshippers of Werthrent have allowed themselves to get eaten as well, believing they would be rewarderd for their sacrifice.
  • Foreshadowing: When Ash's powers first arose, her aura briefly takes the shape of Invictus.
  • Genius Ditz: Once again, KVN shows this when it turns out he's programmed to be skilled at answering riddles. He fails at the last one because it is just a bunch of random crap made up on the spot, though thankfully, the forever-ball he’s been fiddling around with kills the guardian of the key when he throws it down in frustration after failing to figure out the nonsensical riddle.
  • Hyper-Destructive Bouncing Ball: The forever ball, which KVN finds on Serepentia. It ends up killing the old man guarding Werthrent hearth (and the key inside) when KVN throws the ball at him (see Rage Quit below).
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Ash tries to use this trope desperately on her sister; unfortunately, it doesn't work.
  • God Guise: KVN disguises himself as Sentella, snake goddess of good fortune, to distract the long line of worshippers waiting to sacrifice themselves to the Serpent God Werthrent.
  • Madness Mantra: "She's gone, gone. She's gone. SHE'S GONE!!"
  • Nightmare Sequence: Ash has one in which she fights Werthrent.
  • Rage Quit: KVN when he fails to answer the last riddle.
  • Rain of Blood: And a few other body organs when the Fire Serpent self-destructs.
  • Supering in Your Sleep: Ash uses her powers while having a nightmare in which she fights the Serpent God Werthrent. She ends up blasting a hole in the wall of her room.
  • That Man Is Dead: Harp ended up succumbing to the Serpent God's influence long after she was consumed, preventing Ash from getting through to her. See Madness Mantra above.
  • Toilet Humor: Clarence accidentally swallows the key when he and Gary are fighting over it. Near the end of the episode, he can be seen going to the bathroom to retrieve it.
