Recap / Final Space S 2 E 1 The Torra Regata

Go To

Immediately after the battle from the last episode, Gary is dying in space, but gets rescued when he is mistaken by trash and transported to a trash planet where he reunited with Little Cato, KVN and HUE, but the four become property of Clarence due to the planet's laws, and he forces them to help him win a Wacky Race.

Meanwhile, Nightfall returns to kill Lord Commander and rescue Mooncake.

Tropes:

  • Apologetic Attacker: Fox when he is ordered to attack an enemy ship during the race. He can't even finish his job, so Little Cato has to step in and direct Fox's Arm Cannon.
  • Alien Blood: Gary gets a face full of green blood when Ash blows up the head of one of their opponents, who was about to kill Gary. She then draws a moustache on Gary's helmet with it.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In the opening, Gary mentions that a lot of people on Reddit think he's annoying, lampshading his base-breaking status in the fandom.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Despite the Lord Commander's death via harpoon, it is heavily implicated by Nightfall that he will be revived by Invictus... So she gives him a message for his master when he gets revived, that she'll be coming for Invictus next.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: H.U.E. is not used to having a body, so when Gary invites him to a hug, H.U.E. ends up almost crushing Gary.
  • Foreshadowing: Back in season 1, Clarence was just a one-shot character with no importance to the overall plot. So why would Gary feel the need to mention him in the recap, unless Clarence is going to be back and in a larger role this time?
  • Hope Spot: Clarence tells Gary and HUE that they're under his indentured servitude. Of course, the two won’t stand for this and almost escape...until their caught by Clarence’s not-so-sane adopted kids. This happens again when Gary reunites with Little Cato and tries to discuss a breakout plan...too bad Clarence reminds them of his presence and has Ash put them in cuffs before they are sent off to “bed”.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: The Lord Commander. His army has been obliterated, and the commander himself is on the brink of death, unable to use his powers anymore. He can't fight off Nightfall when she comes to finish him.
  • I Have Many Names: Rug Yorkvain, formerly Chag Murfblick, formerly Crix Blangdag, formerly Hux Ringscreckai, a.k.a.Tim White.
  • Immediate Sequel: The episode takes place immediately after the ending of Season 1, revealing what was the light that shone on Gary.
  • Now You Tell Me: Clarence doesn't tell Gary that in the Toro Regata racers are allowed to use lethal force, until they are already participating. Gary finds out the hard way when an opponent targets the Crimson Light.
  • Previously on…: The episode opens with a recap of season 1.
  • Robotic Reveal: Rug Yorkvain, the seemingly human racer that Gary decapitates by headbutting him, turns out to actually be a robot.
  • Shout-Out: Clarence's children perform the Fusion Dance from Dragon Ball Z when he introduces them.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: While the other racers have been training year-round for the Torra Regata, the Crimson Light and it's crew join at the last minute. As such, nobody expects them to stand a chance, but ultimately, they win.
  • Unexplained Recovery: KVN's explanation for how he came back is that he rebuild himself. How he ever pulled that off is anyone's guess, however, since he was clearly damaged beyond repair and deactivated last time we saw him.
    • Though it is explained in a later episode that KVN's are virtually indestructable, so perhaps he just needed time and materials to patch himself up.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Gary's reaction to seeing KVN alive.
  • Wacky Racing: The Torra Regata is the deadly variant, where your opponents are allowed to kill you.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Ash kills a guard on the Starchaser by blowing its head up.
