Recap / Fanboy And Chum Chum S 1 E 5 Trading Day

Go To

Fanboy is in Oz's shop trying to keep Chum Chum away from Yo. Oz, watching TV, tells them to be quiet during commercials. A commercial comes on advertising Mecha-Tech, a toy robot with a multitude of capabilities. Fanboy fantasizes about having one bring him mayonnaise and, like a dog, drag its own butt on the ground.

The next day at school Fanboy finds that everyone in class has a Mecha-Tech, except him and Chum Chum. Yo offers to trade hers to Fanboy for Chum Chum, promising to care for him well, as with her Yamaguchi digital pets. After some hesitation, Fanboy agrees—but only to trading for the day. Fanboy then lies to Chum Chum that he's going to outer space and leaving Chum Chum with Yo for the time being. While Fanboy has fun with Yo's Mecha-Tech, Yo plays with Chum Chum and eventually leads him into large dome with cardboard scenery—where Chum Chum becomes her new Yamaguchi pet.

Meanwhile, Fanboy eventually grows tired of Mecha-Tech and misses Chum Chum. He then accidentally breaks Yo's Mecha-Tech, and it calls the other Mecha-Techs around the playground for help. After an action-packed battle, Fanboy defeats the attacking toys, and goes to Yo to reclaim Chum Chum. But since Yo's Mecha-Tech is now broken beyond repair, she decides that the trade cannot be made and that Chum Chum is hers. Fanboy confesses to Chum Chum that he traded him and cannot get him back, and begs Yo to help reunite him. Fanboy is then seen alongside Chum Chum playing as Yo's Yamaguchi pets.

Tropes

  • An Aesop:
    • Wanting something is better than actually having it.
    • Don’t lie to your friends just for the sake of wanting something else.
    • You shouldn’t trade something special of yours for the world.
  • Catchphrase: Mechatech's "I await your command!". Becomes a running gag.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Oz's hoarding nature was not seen once.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Chum Chum is this briefly to Fanboy after he reveals he lied to him for the trade.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Though this is the second episode aired but the third produced, this is the first speaking appearance of Yo, and also marks the introduction of Oz.
  • Shout-Out: The Mechatech itself looks an awful lot like Mazinger Z.
