Recap / Family Matters S 3 E 9 Born To Be Mild

Go To

A vicious gang called the Dragons assaults the family and destroys Rachel's Place. Seeking justice, Steve and Carl team up to infiltrate the gang and lock them up for good.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as the Dragons are about to trash Rachel's Place in front of the family, Carl storms in and orders them to halt.
  • Broken Tears: Rachel, horrified upon discovering the extensive damage caused by the Dragons.
  • Calling Card: Deconstructed. Everyone knows that The Dragons were clearly the vandals due to the calling card, but Carl correctly points out that it actually proves nothing. The Dragons could simply claim someone else left it in an effort to frame them, and the other members would simply provide fake alibis for the crime. In a court of law, this would be enough to provide reasonable doubt, and they would go free. Even if it was The Dragons, they can't prove which members did it based on the calling card alone, so the alibis are all they have to go on.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Thanks to Murtaugh accidentally cuffing Carl and himself with trick handcuffs, they miss their cue after Steve signals them to ambush the Dragons, leaving him at the gang's mercy. Thankfully, they arrive before Steve gets hurt.
  • Chained Heat: Lt. Murtaugh, who would rather play around with trick handcuffs rather than get serious and try to get evidence to stop the Dragons once and for all.
  • Gangbangers: The Dragons, who cause no end of trouble for the main characters.
  • Hidden Wire: Steve infiltrates the Dragons' turf under the guise that he wants to join their gang, secretly hiding a microphone in his shirt so that Carl and Murtaugh (who listen in from a police van) could record their confession and lock them up. Chain eventually finds out and nearly kills Urkel for it.
  • Genius Bruiser: Osgood, The Brute of the gang, acts surprisingly verbose when discussing the graffiti he sprayed at Rachel's Place, treating it like a fine work of art. This is actually how Steve gets him to confess to the crime.
    Osgood: I'm an artiste.
Steve: Did you do that great dragon at Rachel's Place?
Osgood: Yeah, you see that? I was gonna have it come out of this lake of fire, but I thought it was too derivative and trite.
  • Hollywood Healing: Rachel's restaurant is trashed, yet looks perfect in the ending scene, as does Eddie, despite him having been beaten up by the gang.
  • Kilroy Was Here: Harriette points out the obvious — "They sure left their calling card!" — when the destruction and graffiti is seen for the first time.
  • Papa Wolf: Carl is beyond frustrated and distraught and wants to physically take out Chain, the leader of the Dragons, after Eddie is badly beaten in an ambush. Urkel gets him to reconsider, knowing that Carl could be making a career-destroying mistake.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: The biggest, most intimidating member of the Dragons is named Osgood. Steve jokes that it's a great name for a duck.
  • Wham Line: Just when the family thinks that everything's okay, Harriette gets an urgent call from Carl.
    Rachel: Harriette, what's wrong?
Harriette: The Dragons just trashed your restaurant.
  • Wham Shot: Rachel asks if the Dragons can get away with anything after Carl explains how they'll escape the charges for vandalizing her restaurant. Carl says "I wouldn't go that far", only for a badly beaten Eddie to walk in and declare "I would."
  • You Talk Too Much!: Osgood, when Chain figures out that they are being secretly recorded.
