Recap / Family Guy Fanon S1E4 "Do and Die"

Go To

In the first original episode to Family Guy Fanon, the Mayor of Quahog Buddy Cianci resigns du, famous actor, Adam West starts running for mayor. But Lois doesn't want someone as loose and silly as him becoming mayor and runs against him, with Brian and Loretta aiding her campaign. However, running against a popular celebrity who can use his big vocabulary and superficial looks to wow the people proves to be far more challenging.

The page for the episode can be found here, and the script for the episode can be read here.

This episode contains tropes of:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Horace, Cleveland Jr., Tricia Takanawa, Bruce and (of course) Mayor Adam West all appear in this episode and have this be their debut in this adaption.
  • Bad Liar: Cleveland Jr.
Loretta: Junior, we've been over this. You gotta stop tricking people into eating worms you dig up in the garden. Please tell me you're not planning to do this again.
Cleveland Jr.: [looks down to his pants pocket where some worms crawling out of it and crammed them deeper in the pocket] Noooooo.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When going into a radio station, Brian worries about being identified as a dog and being kicked out, which almost happens... however the security guard instead of reaching for him reaches for Meg instead and allows Brian to go through to his surprise.
  • Butt-Monkey: Meg throughout. She's given no role in Lois' campaign group - with Brian telling her she's there just for the illusion of having a purpose in the group - her attempts to help out via door-to-door campaign premotor and polls around Quahog are shut down (the former having the door slamed on her often and the later being almost ignored), and is even mistaken for a dog in the radio station and kicked out!
  • A Day in the Limelight: Lois and Loretta's first big role away from the Griffins.
  • Decided by One Vote: Played for Laughs when Peter and Quagmire's idea for the Beer Bar Buddies to do Saturday (Peter tight-roping and Quagmire jetskiing) are tied, but Cleveland can't choose between either one, leaving them tied.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Randall Fargus - who doesn't properly debut until "Running Mates" - has a quick appearance as an unnamed teacher in Chris' classroom.
  • Election Day Episode: Lois spends run against Adam West for mayor due to not being pleased with a loony idiot like him becoming mayor.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • The Drunken Clam opener establishes Horace - with his friendship with Peter, Cleveland and Quagmire from giving them all nicknames like "The Pete-boy", "Dark Choclate" and "The Q-Man" - and Peter, Cleveland and Quagmire's deeper friendship from playing Would You Rather?.
    • The first Cutaway Gag also gives a small one for Cleveland Jr.. Showcasing him as a troublemaker who likes to prank and troll people for fun.
    • Adam West's first scene is hi
  • Fantasy Sequence: Stewie where he imagines being the mayor of a now destroyed Quahog, with the Griffins being used as his slaves. Complete with whipping them when they fall out of line.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Considering you already know the show, it's no surprise that Adam West wins against Lois.
  • Foreshadowing: Peter's comment in "Do and Die" about the Beer Bar Buddies needing to find more members foreshadows the subplot of "Neighbor Pains" where they try to find a fourth member.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In-Universe example. When Buddy Cianci gets arrested for being charged with racketeering while sober, Chris mentions that it makes his middle school's name, Buddy Cianci Junior High, and the reason why Principal Sloan named the school that age poorly, with a Cutaway Gag showing a presentation that had Principal Sloan say that he named the middle school after Buddy Cianci because he was such a great person and would never betray them.
  • Idiot Houdini: Peter wrecks a bunch of cars and buildings and killed a bunch of people, while he was drunk driving. Yet he doesn't go to prison because Quahog law says that "inebriated felonies" are not illegal, since you can't blame someone for doing something bad, while intoxicated.
    • However, this is subverted around the end, as the next time Peter goes on another one of his drunken crime sprees after Adam West becomes mayor, "Batman" shows up and kicks his ass.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Adam West falls from a helicopter to smack on the roof of Town Hall and crash on the wooden podium after failing to grab the rope to swing down to the podium, but recovers quickly.
Adam West: I meant to do that!
  • Noodle Incident: Cleveland reveals to have experience eating a worm due to his son Cleveland Jr. tricking him into eating a worm a month ago (that he made him throw up). And judging from Loretta's annoyed tone, this wasn't the first time ether.
  • Origins Episode: Serves as one for Mayor Adam West and how he got his job as mayor. Compared to usual examples, it's not told in a flashback.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The episode's rising action is based on the actual Quahog mayor Buddy Cianci being sent to jail and resigning as mayor.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Horace allowing the Beer Bar Buddies to take their beers to go, as there's no law saying that they can't do that, unknowingly leading to The Beer Bar Buddies drinking while driving and getting into tons of trouble.
