Recap / Empath: The Luckiest Smurf - The High Cost Of Smurfing

Go To

Vanity comes back to the Smurf Village from his visit with Periwinkle the pixie with a drug problem, and Empath and Papa Smurf go visit the pixies to find out who's getting Vanity addicted.

This story provides the following examples of:

  • Brainwashed: Empath, by Scullcap's white powder. Fortunately, Polaris breaks through and brings Empath back to himself.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Snappy Smurfling stains his pants after eating glowberries, which repulses his fellow Smurfs and Smurflings.
  • Compressed Vice: Vanity's addiction to pixie dust lasts that one episode.
  • Deadly Nosebleed: Vanity is found collapsed in his house suffering from what appeared to be a fatal nosebleed. Fortunately Empath senses that Vanity is barely alive and brings him to the infirmary and heals him, though Vanity has to stay in the infirmary to recover from the loss of blood.
  • Drugs Are Bad: Vanity is seen doing pixie dust and collapses on the floor in near-death, inspiring Empath to find out who and where Vanity is getting the drug from. There's a brief section at the beginning where Snappy Smurfling eats glowberries (which in The Smurfs episode "St. Smurf And The Dragon" helps create Papa Smurf's spell of invisibility over the village) which gives him hallucinations but also gives him a sour stomach and "smurfarrhea". Vanity recovers and learns his lesson, but Snappy, being the Smurfling that he is, goes and sniffs the pollen from a dumdum flower, which makes him both high and stupid.
  • Fantastic Drug: Three of them appear in this story — glowberries, which cause hallucinations but also give Smurfs stomach cramps and a bad case of "smurfarrhea"; pixie dust, which is basically the story series' analog to cocaine (and scopolamine, a.k.a. "Devil's Breath", when Scullcap blew some into Empath's face, getting him to fall under the influence so that he could manipulate him to his own ends); and dumdum flowers, whose pollen causes whoever sniffs it to be both high and stupid.
  • Mind Meld: Polaris Psyche does this with Vanity to find out who has been giving him pixie dust as a drug.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Vanity says "sweet mother of Smurfness" a few times in this story.
  • Urine Trouble: Polaris Psyche discusses about Puppy's "private rituals" to Empath and Smurfette, which makes Smurfette hold her face in disgust.
