Tropes

  • An Aesop: Nobody is born a scientist. You have to study, learn, and practice.
  • Animesque: The girls' "selfie" is drawn this way.
  • Ascended Fangirl: In-universe. Tomiko continues to fangirl over Elena while claiming that she's totally grown over it, and also has another moment when Luisa and Francisco join them in the end.
  • The Bus Came Back: As we return to the Science Academy, Tomiko and Professor Ochoa return after their last appearances in "Class Act".
  • Call-Back: Elena's arm is still broken due to the events of the previous episode.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The ceremonial key to the observatory. Elena suggests that they use it as a lightning rod.
    • The metal cup that melts after it gets struck by lightning. Elena realizes that if lightning is hot enough to melt metal, then they can use the lightning rod to direct the lightning into melting the flux.
    • The lightning rod. Initially, it was used to keep lightning from striking the observatory again, but Elena realizes it can also be used to get the lightning to melt the flux.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When her powers go into a frenzy again, Elena calms herself by thinking of baby jaquins.
    • Elena recalls the time she failed at making tres leches. Tres leches was established in "Island of Youth" to be Esteban's favorite type of cake.
  • Hollywood Healing: Averted. Elena is still injured in her right arm from the previous episode, meaning it will take
a while for her to recover.
  • It Runs in the Family: Francisco is the founder of Avalor's Astronomy Club, which partly explains Isabel's interest in science. Could also double as an example of Shared Family Quirks.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • While waiting for the lightning to strike the flux, Tomiko is about to tell the girls about something that happened at Science Camp last summer until the lightning strikes mid-sentence.
    • When Isa assures Elena that the plan will be easy like making tres leches, an uncertain Elena counters with the time that they tried to make tres leches but "I [she] couldn't even make it to one leche."
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Abuelo says that he's not hungry, his wife and granddaughters are shocked. This is somewhat Truth in Television—if elderly show loss in appetite, it usually means an underlying medical condition, so Abuela's concern was rather understandable.
  • Pep-Talk Song: Tomiko sings "Put Your Mind to It" to Elena in the climax.
  • Pun:
    • Professor Ochoa remarks that Abuelo's passion for astronomy is "out of this world".
    • Tomiko says "unlocking the future" while holding the ceremonial key.
  • Shout-Out: The girls attach an electrical wire to the top of a building during a thunderstorm as a lightning rod and later use it, referencing Back to the Future.
  • Technobabble: Elena gets confused by Isa and Tomiko's science talk. At one point, when they tell her to get silicon dioxide from the materials shed, she finds out that it's just sand.
  • Verbal Backspace: Upon Elena and Isa presenting him with the fixed telescope to see the comet, Abuelo hugs them and exclaims that this is the best day of his life... second to the day he married Abuela, of course.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: As a result of Elena's strong feelings of self-doubt, her emotion powers activate and cause the walls of the shed she's in to close in on her, representing that she feels overwhelmed.
  • You Are Better Than You Think: These words are in the song "Put Your Mind to It".
  • Wham Episode: Elena's dress can also turn grey when she feels strong self-doubt.
