Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 4 E 7 Ed Overboard

Go To

Marie and Lee purposely give May a bad makeover, and after she throws a fit over it she begins crying, thinking that Ed will never love her now. Marie and Lee decide to make it up to May by kidnapping Ed, and bring him back to the trailer park for May. Double D and Eddy are forced to ask the Urban Rangers for help to get their friend back.

"Ed Overboard" provides examples of:

  • Accidental Tickle Torture: Shortly after Ed is kidnapped by the Kankers, May draws on his belly with a crayon and a stamp, which causes Ed to burst out giggling while she does so.
  • Apology Gift: Lee and Marie kidnap Ed and tie him to a tree as a gift to May, apologizing for giving her a bad makeover.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The Kankers constantly argue and fight each other, with May especially being a target for her sisters as seen in the opening scene. But when May cries over the thought of her "boyfriend" Ed not liking her because she's ugly now, Lee tells her she has a great personality and she and Marie kidnap Ed to present him to May as an apology.
  • Blatant Lies: After May catches Jonny and Jimmy trying to free Ed, Lee notices that the two of them are wearing the same uniform as Rolf, realizing he was trying to distract them. Rolf makes the excuse that "there was a sale", which is obviously not believed.
  • Clothing Switch: Apparently what Marie did to Jonny and May did to Jimmy. Jonny is seen wearing Marie's black shirt and green pants. Jimmy is wearing May's shirt and red shorts. Marie also put panties and a bra on Jonny, while May put a tutu, makeup, and a bow on Jimmy. This most likely happened while the urban rangers were playing dead.
  • Covered in Kisses: At the end of the episode, Rolf shows up covered in kisses from the Kankers after the Eds left him and the Rangers behind.
  • Dirty Coward: Eddy shamelessly tries to back out of rescuing Ed from the Kankers and only agrees to rescue him (after the Urban Rangers fail to do so) when Double D refuses to leave without Ed. And then, after rescuing Ed, they leave the Urban Rangers at the mercy of the Kankers, who proceed to dish out humiliating punishments on them, much to their anger.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After Lee and Marie intentionally give her a bad makeover, May angrily starts throwing things at her sisters, forcing them to hide behind the couch.
  • Enemy Mine: Double D and Eddy recruit the Urban Rangers to help them rescue Ed from the Kankers. Downplayed since only Eddy hates them, with Double D holding no ill will toward them.
  • Faking the Dead: The Urban Rangers attempt to survive their encounter with the Kankers by pretending to drop dead. The sisters catch on quickly though and proceed to evaluate their condition and inflict unknown humiliations on their "corpses".
  • Fingore: When being sworn into Rangerhood so they could help save Ed, Double D and Eddy place their hands in the Urban Ranger manual. Unfortunately, afterwards, the book is slammed shut on their hands.
  • Forceful Kiss: While Ed is tied to a tree, May takes the opportunity to smother him in kisses. Then the Kankers hook up a system where May swings into Ed upside down to kiss him.
  • Here We Go Again!: Shortly after Double D and Eddy get Ed back, the Urban Rangers show up and kidnap him themselves, with Rolf saying it is revenge for the Eds leaving them to the mercy of the Kankers. Eddy, not wanting anything to do with this, walks off in a huff, while Double D begs Rolf to take Eddy instead.
  • Jerkass: Eddy, as usual. Eddy refuses to help Ed after he gets kidnapped by the Kankers, laughs when May starts molesting Ed, laughs when the Urban Rangers get caught by the Kankers, and finally, abandons the Urban Rangers, all without a shred of guilt.
  • Karma Houdini: A very rare episode where Eddy gets away with his rotten behavior. Eddy gets no punishment for trying to abandon Ed, abandoning the Urban Rangers, and laughing at their misfortune.
  • Kissing Discretion Shot: May pulls Ed's face off-screen for a moment and can be heard planting quick kisses across his face. In the very next scene though it is subverted, when the Kankers make a system where May swings into Ed upside down, slamming into him lips first. This is the only time in the series a Kanker and Ed are shown kissing on-screen.
  • Merit Badges for Everything: The Urban Rangers already have merit badges for the most mundane tasks imaginable, but this episode reveals that they have a medal for this exact situation, known as the "Free The Fool" medal.
  • Shirtless Captives: Lee strips Ed of his shirt offscreen before tying him to the tree.
  • Take Me Instead: Played with in the final scene, when the Urban Rangers kidnap Ed themselves as revenge for the Eds abandoning them, Double D begs for Rolf to take Eddy instead.
  • Think of the Censors!: When Double D and Eddy are forced to swear into Rangerhood to come with the Rangers on their mission, Eddy snarks "I'd swear, but standards won't let me".
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Ed's reaction when Marie and Lee show up and haul him off after he glues his head to the table.
Ed: Welp, that's it for me!
  • Two Words: I Can't Count: Eddy's opinion of Edd's arts and crafts.
    Eddy: Two words: Lame... O!
  • We Need a Distraction: Rolf distracts the Kankers by acting as a salesman selling grill cleaner, while Jonny and Jimmy free Ed. Unfortunately, Ed misreads the situation and does his own distraction (singing off key) while Jonny and Jimmy go for help, not realizing they are the help. This gets them all caught.
