Recap / Earth: Final Conflict S2E13 "Second Chances"

Go To

Zo'or introduces his new project called Second Chances involving de-aging elderly humans back to the prime of their life. The first subject is a dying old woman named Pearl Bell. Da'an has misgivings about Second Chances and invites Pearl and her son for an interview. He tries to make Pearl aware of the possible risks, but she doesn't care. She does state that prior to being selected for the project, she didn't care one way or another about any aliens. The transformation is a success, and Pearl is de-aged to her 25-year-old self. She becomes the spokesperson for Second Chances. However, at an interview, she states that she has supported the Taelons for years after they saved her son's life. Liam suspects that she's lying and has Augur investigate Second Chances. Meanwhile, Lili meets with Haley Simmons, who leads the Resistance cell in the Pacific Northwest. Haley believes that Doors is too public a figure to lead the movement and wants Lili to take the reigns. Doors himself objects, having no intention of stepping down, and states that he will only fund the Resistance for as long as he leads it. During a press-conference, one of the newly-transformed people becomes violent. In the commotion, Haley and another Resistance member kidnap Pearl so they could study what was done to her. Liam learns that Pearl's memories have been altered during the procedure, and he brings her son to confirm it to her. Sandoval and the project leader falsify evidence that the man who went violent was a Resistance member in order to drum up more support for the project and more hatred for the Resistance. Liam intends to sneak into the Second Chances facility along with Haley, while Lili disarms the security system. They learn that Second Chances has been implanting tailored false memories that serve Zo'or's agenda. A security guard raises the alarm. Lili takes command of the response team, while Liam and Haley dress as members of the team. The team leader quickly figures out the ruse and orders the building locked down, but they're able to steal one of their vehicles and escape. They release the data to the public, prompting an investigation, although Liam and Haley admit that it's only a matter of time until the project is back online. Haley decides that Liam fits the role of a leader more than Lili, and Lili agrees. Liam says he'll do whatever he has to.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Justified, given the technology involved. Pearl becomes much younger than her own son.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: When infiltrating Second Chances, Lili pretends to have been sent to question the facility's personnel about Pearl in order to find her. While there, she disables security to allow Liam and Haley to sneak in. When the break-in is detected, she immediately takes charge of the response team and then berates the team leader for allowing the intruders to escape.
  • Fake Memories: Zo'or's plan is to implant custom-tailored false memories into the subjects in order to promote the Taelon agenda. For example, the first official test subject was a woman who didn't have any strong feelings about the Taelons prior to being selected. After going through the transition, she claimed that the Taelons saved her son's life. However, her son reveals that his life was saved by a human doctor using a well-documented procedure, not some advanced Taelon technology. Some memories can be extremely intense, causing the subjects to have violent episodes. In one case, a subject died when he was stunned by a paralyzing weapon.
  • Fountain of Youth: The process developed by Second Chances turns a human body into energy, then scrubs the cells from any damage done by time and disease before reassembling the body on the other side. Someone at the end of their natural life can go back to their 25-year-old self. There doesn't seem to be any negative side effects from the process, although some test subjects have become violent due to the intensity of the false memories implanted during the process.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: At the end of the episode, Da'an and Liam get into an argument over the value of humans resisting the Taelons. Liam points out that humans need to be free to live. Da'an states that, no matter how he feels about humanity and Liam personally, he's still a Taelon and will anything he has to for his species. Liam says he understand because he feels the same way about humanity.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Liam and Haley butt heads over authority and practices within the Resistance. However, in the end, they work well together, and Haley admits that Liam is the leader the Resistance needs, someone who can inspire them.
