Recap / Earth: Final Conflict S2E11 "Gauntlet"

Go To

A Jaridian escapes from captivity on the mothership. He takes Lili hostage and forces her to fly them out of there. Liam follows, but they jump to ID space before he can fire, so he jumps after them. Both shuttles are pulled out of the jump by an unknown vessel, which brings them aboard and drains the shuttles of power. Lili realizes that the Jaridian wants to take the shuttle to his homeworld, so that the Jaridians can study and reverse-engineer its ID drive, which would allow them to bring a fleet to Earth and wipe out the Taelons. The Jaridian takes Lili and explores the ship to try to shut down whatever is keeping the shuttles there. Liam follows them and realizes that the ship was built by the Kimera. He and the Jaridian fight. The Jaridian is surprised to learn that Liam has the shaqarava, just like him. Liam explains that he's part-Kimera and that the Jaridian needs him to figure out how to get away from the ship. The ship was built by the Kimera to share knowledge with others, but its corrupted programming is putting them in danger. Zo'or sends Sandoval to look for the Jaridian personally. On their way to the ship's core, Liam is hit by an energy blast, which stops his heart. The Jaridian uses his shaqarava to revive him. After reaching the core, they are confronted by a humanoid figure that tells them that they are not ready to receive Kimera knowledge, but the ship will also not release them. The Jaridian demands the knowledge to use against the Taelons, and the ship blasts him with energy. Liam talks to the core and explains that the ship's programming has become damaged over time, resulting in it killing the individuals who come aboard in violation of its purpose. When the ship suggests repairing the damage, Liam points out that it could happen again, and this time he won't be there to show the ship that it happened, which leaves only one solution. The ship initiates self-destruct and gives them four minutes to leave. They make it back to the shuttles. Liam gives the Jaridian one of the shuttles to get home but rigs the ID drive to burn out after one use. After the ship is destroyed, they're contacted by Sandoval, and Liam reports that the Jaridian died aboard the ship.

Meanwhile, Da'an calls the meeting of the Synod to decide whether Zo'or's actions and violation of the Synod's orders merit his dismissal as its leader. While he makes compelling arguments, Zo'or manages to sway the other Synod members against his removal.

  • Collapsing Lair: As Liam, Lili, and the Jaridian are racing back to the shuttles, the ship begins to come apart around them.
  • Discriminate and Switch: The Jaridian is impressed that such a strong warrior spirit could come in such a fragile shape as Lili. Lili assumes he means that women aren't meant to be soldiers. The alien explains that Jaridian men and women fight side-by-side. He meant her being a fragile human.
  • Dying Race: The Jaridian explains that the Taelons split off from the Jaridians in order to seek out spiritual perfection and to control the shaqarava through the Commonality. This has resulted in them losing the ability to reproduce. They've been seeking to find a way to rejoin both races in order to regain that ability.
  • No Name Given: The Jaridian never gives his name throughout the episode.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: The core of the Kimera ship takes on a humanoid form to communicate with Liam.
  • Great Escape: The Jaridian manages to break out of his prison after years in captivity.
  • Hand Blast: The Jaridian can fire blasts of energy out of his shaqarava organs on the palms. When an energy blast stops Liam's heart, the Jaridian uses the shaqarava to revive him defibrillator-stype.
  • Honor Before Reason: When the ship initiates its Self-Destruct Mechanism, the wounded Jaridian insists on staying behind and getting the honorable death he deserves. Liam and Lili ignore him and drag him back to the shuttles.
  • Only the Worthy May Pass: Liam explains that the Kimera built the repository ship to share their accumulated knowledge with those seeking it, but only if they're worthy. Thus the ship will run them through a series of physical and mental tests to determine the worthiness. Except this ship's programming seems to have been corrupted, and the danger is now real.
  • Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale: Zo'or sends Sandoval and a number of others out to search for the Jaridian. It looks like they are traveling to different sectors of space to scan them. It's not entirely clear how they expect to find someone in space without having any idea where they might be.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: The ship initiates self-destruct and gives Liam, Lili, and the Jaridian 4 minutes to leave.
  • Super-Senses: The Jaridian's senses
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Liam uses logic to convince the ship to destroy itself in order to avoid violating its primary purpose of studying civilizations without interference.
  • Tractor Beam: The alien ship pulls both shuttles aboard with a focused gravity beam.
  • Villain Ball: After the Jaridian's escape, Da'an chews Zo'or out on the stupidity of keeping a live Jaridian aboard the mothership. Zo'or tries to point out how much useful information they've been able to gleam, but Da'an counters that the Jaridian might be able to bring an ID drive to his people, thus allowing them to come in force. He points out that Zo'or's actions are unworthy of the leader of the Synod.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: One of the hallways aboard the ship traps Liam, Lili, and the Jaridian, and then the walls begin to close in on them. Liam realizes they have to climb up to escape.
  • Worthy Opponent: Liam not only saves the Jaridian aboard the ship, but he puts him aboard one of the shuttles and tells him that he can get home, but the ID drive will burn out after one use. The Jaridian tells him that he'll kill him when he finally makes his way to Earth. Liam tells him that he may kill him first before proffering his hand and wishing him a safe trip. The Jaridian shakes it.
