Recap / Duncanville S 1 E Classless President

Go To

Duncan runs for class president against Mia but realizes the competition is more than he bargained for; Kimberly participates in a cookie fundraiser.

Tropes:

  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Parodied with an outdated school policy from World War 2 that allows the teenagers voted in as Oakdale student body president unrestricted executive powers. This allows Duncan to pull off some truly audacious feats like replacing all the drinking fountains with soda machines and turning the model UN club room into a ball pit. However, while his authority is nigh-absolute, his budget isn't, and his burning through all the school's funds to not let his classmates down even if it meant hiring BTS to act as hallway janitors is a major wake-up call for the campus that this presidential style is not sustainable.
  • An Aesop: Democracy Is Flawed as voters can gravitate towards the promise of short-term but immediate benefits, but even the most well-intentioned and promising candidate has to respect their potential constituents and not talk down to them lest they become alienated and made open to the above alternatives.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it seems the cookies Kimberly was supposed to sell would save her family from the bears, it turns out one of the bears is blocking the way to the cookies.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Jack, Annie and Jing find out how Kimberly tricked them when they overhear her bragging about it on the phone.
