Recap / Duck Tales S 1 E 47 Magicas Magic Mirror Take Me Out Of The Ballgame

Go To

In the first of two short stories, Magica attempts to use a 2-way mirror to trick Scrooge into giving up his Number One Dime to her once again. In the second, the nephews are forced to play their big baseball game without Coach Launchpad, forcing Duckworth to step in.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The second short marks one of the rare times Duckworth has a starring role.
  • Bad Future: Magica attempts to invoke this, showing a fake future in the mirror where Scrooge's businesses will suffer unless he gives his dime to her alter ego.
  • Baseball Episode: The second one is about Duckworth's attempts as a baseball coach.
  • Captain Crash: In the second short, Launchpad crashes, but this time it's because he got hit in the head by the ball that Doofus hit. That's of little comfort to Scrooge, who was riding with him.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: When one of the Beagle Brats remarks that Duckworth looks so dumb, they won't have to cheat to win, Ma Beagle chastises him.
Ma Beagle: Not cheat? Why, cheating is...a family tradition!
  • Dropped Glasses: While up at bat, Doofus' glasses fall off just before his final chance to hit a run. The Beagle Brat back catcher steps on the lenses, smashing them. Doofus still goes on to hit a homerun and win the game.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After her ruse is discovered, Magica tries to zap the ducks in revenge. Thanks to some deflecting mirrors, the blast hits her instead and transports her to a distant mountain.
  • Idiot Ball: The normally intelligent Duckworth does a number of stupid things during his stint as coach, much to his team's chagrin. During the last part of the game, though, he throws it away and becomes quite helpful as the kids try to make up for lost opportunity, even being partially responsible for Doofus making the deciding hit.
  • Two Shorts: Notable for being the only episode of the series to have this type of format.
  • Vehicular Sabotage: To solidify Scrooge's faith in the "magic" mirror, Magica uses a dummy of Launchpad's plane to show him crashing and falling down the chimney and then sabotages the real plane with a magic spell to make sure Launchpad crashes in the place and manner that the mirror "predicted."
  • We Will Meet Again: After being sent away, Magica vows to return and get Scrooge's Number One Dime.
