Recap / Drake And Josh Episode 51 Steered Straight

Go To

Drake and Josh get sent to a steered straight program for using fake IDs to get into a nightclub. Things go off the rails when a thief steals the cop car.

Episode Tropes:

  • Atrocious Alias: Drake uses the names "Jefferson Steelflex" and "Alvin Yakotori" on the fake IDs. Unsurprisingly the bouncer isn't fooled for half a second and calls the cops.
  • Bound and Gagged:
    • Josh was already handcuffed in steered straight and the cop for some reason puts a grapefruit in his mouth thinking that it would be a good place to hold it.
    • When Walter comes home early, Drake and Josh handcuff him, duct tape his mouth, and lock him in the closet. This is a rare heroic example as they did this so he couldn't reveal their criminal facade to serious hardened criminals and so he wouldn't get hurt by guys who have no problem silencing him permanently.
  • Call-Back: Walter and Audrey point out that the duo burned down their neighbor's tree house and got arrested for fencing grills. Megan adds on Josh's ticket.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: While trying to sneak into a nightclub was wrong, putting them in a program meant for troubled youths looking at a life of crime is a little extreme when they just wanted to see the band. When listing off prior run ins with the law or mishaps, everything they say was an accident.
  • From Bad to Worse: Drake and Josh's stint with steered straight results in them being kidnapped and nearly in league with a conspiracy to kidnap the governor.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Walter tells the boys they need to act like men, while wearing a dress.
  • Idiot Ball: Josh should've known better than to go with Drake's plan regardless of innocuous intentions, or at least suggested he get IDs with more convincing names.
  • Karma Houdini: Audrey ends up scot-free despite being just as culpable as Walter.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Walter ends up Bound and Gagged in a closet and forgotten when the family goes out for dinner.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: Drake scares the criminals out of the house by using Josh's magic kit to fake a fight where he beats Josh with a banana so bad that he bleeds, rips off his hand, then bites his finger off the severed hand.
  • Police Are Useless: The cop taking Drake and Josh to jail leaves his car unlocked, with the key in the ignition and leaves Drake and Josh in the car alone. It's a wonder he didn't get sued.
  • Series Continuity Error: Megan claims Josh got a speeding ticket, but his ticket was for running a stop sign.
  • Smart Ball: Drake holds this in the second half, being able to perfectly understand Josh with a grapefruit stuffed in his mouth and coming up with several smart plans on the fly, even if a few backfired.
  • Something We Forgot: Drake and Josh are still high on adrenaline from fear after having been in league with hardened criminals and forget to let Walter out of the closet. They remember this when relaying the experience to Megan and Audrey, but no one bothers to go rescue him.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: The cop giving Drake and Josh a ride in his police car as part of the steered straight program comments that the grapefruit he's eating could use some sugar, to Drake and Josh's bemusement. Later on, the criminal who steals the car adds some sugar to the grapefruit before eating it.
