Recap / Dragons The Nine Realms S 8 E 4 Of Gods And Monsters

Go To

While out looking for Plowhorn who was captured by Sledkin, Buzzsaw asks the riders for help curing his dragon who was attacked by Jörmungandr. D'Angelo's willingness to help his dragon despite Plowhorn being missing causes Buzzsaw to reveal Sledkin's location to the riders. When they arrive, however, they are informed by Linda that Sledkin has taken Plowhorn to find the God's Realm, a realm holding a piece of Dragoncite that produces most of the oxygen for the Hidden World. They follow Sledkin's phone signal but are too late to stop her from removing the piece of Dragoncite. Its protector, a Gem Blaster, comes out and attacks the riders mistaking them for the thieves. However, as everyone starts losing oxygen, it falls back into its hole. This causes the crystal Sledkin and Tom stand on to shake and Sledkin to lose balance. Despite Tom's efforts to save her, Sledkin falls into the hole presumably to her death. Tom manages to return the gem into its place. The riders return home shaken and saddened by Sledkin's death.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After Old Jack got seriously hurt protecting Buzzsaw from Jörmungandr, Buzzsaw begs D'Angelo for his help despite considering him his enemy.
  • Badass Normal: Sledkin took down two Gembreaker with nothing but a stun baton.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Sledkin continuously shocks Plowhorn with her stun baton to get her to do what she wants.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: After D'Angelo helped his dragon, Buzzsaw tells the riders where Sledkin's base is without being asked to.
  • Bond Creatures: To the shock of the riders, Buzzsaw is shown to be genuinely worried about his dragons well-being.
  • Callback: When Buzzsaw asks the riders for help, Alex brings up how he pretended to be a Nice Guy who fell into the Hidden World by accident when they first met.
  • Death by Materialism: After falling from the crystal, Sledkin is caught by Tom before she can fall into the Gem Blaster's hole below them. Despite slipping his grasp and him pleading for her to pull herself up to safety, she doesn't even attempt to pull herself up. Rather, she reaches for a piece of Dragoncite which fell close to her. As a result, when she finally slips Tom's grasp, she falls into the mist covering the Gem Blaster's hole to her death.
  • Death Is a Sad Thing: Despite all she did to them, the riders are visibly shaken and saddened by Sledkin's death.
  • Disney Villain Death: After losing her balance on the giant crystal and almost falling into the Gem Blaster's hole, she gets caught by Tom. However, she begins slipping his grasp. Despite Tom's warnings and pleas, she tries to go for the piece of Dragoncite she stole which landed a bit further away rather than pulling herself up. This results in her falling to her death into a cloud of mist covering the entrance to the Gem Blasters hole with her scream slowly fading as she falls further down.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Linda is visibly distraught by how far Sledkin is willing to go to achive her goal.
  • Heel Realization: D'Angelo helping his dragon despite his own missing and him telling Buzzsaw to do some introspecting results in the self-proclaimed King of Dragons to change his ways.
  • Heroic BSoD: Following Buzzsaw's interference with their last plan to stop Jörmungandr, Tom starts the episode still depressed and needs to be reminded by Jun and Alex that thinking about the past won't solve the ongoing problem.
  • It's All About Me: Sledkin is perfectly fine with destroying the Hidden World killing all dragons in the process if it means she gets rich and famous by doing so.
Tom: You're going to destroy the entire Hidden World for what? Fame?!
Sledkin: And money. Don't forget about the money.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Buzzsaw being distressed and begging him for help makes D'Angelo believe he is telling the truth about Old Jack needing help.
  • Shout-Out: When the riders finally catch up to Sledkin, Alex calls her on her phone and asks: "What's up, doc?" in a tone of voice similar to a certain animated bunny.
  • Sudden Soundtrack Stop: When Sledkin finally slips Tom's grasp and falls into the Gem Blaster's hole to her death, the music stops playing.
  • Suspicion Aesop: When Buzzsaw asks the riders for help saying his dragons was seriously injured by Jörmungandr, the riders, excluding D'Angelo. don't believe him thinking he's lying in order to lure them into a trap. However, upon D'Angelo's urging on the off-chance he is telling the truth, they follow him - and cannot believe their eyes when they see he was telling the truth.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Sledkin rigged the elevator to her base with the explicit intend that when the riders come looking for her, it will plumed into the depth and kill them.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: When the riders initially don't believe Buzzsaw really needs their help, he tells them he isn't lying about Old Jack being seriously hurt and that they have to believe him.
