Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 5 E 9 Tone Death

Go To

The riders go out in a routine mission to save dragon eggs from being taken by poachers. Unfortunately, the latest egg they rescue hatches into a loudmouth of a baby dragon. Not only are the riders unable to get a moment's peace, but the worst comes when the baby (named Garff by Tuffnut) begins spitting amber...

Tropes:

  • Adopt the Dog: The riders have a hard time training Garff, and he'll be a dangerous predator when he grows up. But they'd rather not kill or abandon him. So they go back to Melody Island and have the Death Song adopt him.
  • Badass in Distress: Everyone gets caught in the amber trap this time, Hiccup, Heather, and Windshear included. If it wasn't for what they learned from Garff, and Hiccup's new fire dagger, they would've been Death Song lunch.
  • Call-Forward: Hiccup develops an early prototype of his fire sword from How to Train Your Dragon 2. This version is a nonretractable solid dagger with Monstrous Nightmare gel poured into the fuller, used to cut through the Death Song amber.
Astrid: You know, if that were like twice the size, it would make a really cool sword.
Hiccup: Exactly. I'm gonna call this... "Inferno".
  • Cutting the Knot: In order to keep Garff silent as they approach Melody Island, Fishlegs just knocks him out with dragon nip. Heather does help with humming to keep Garff asleep for most of the ride.
  • Dynamic Entry: The Death Song makes its presence known by catching Heather, Windshear, Fishlegs, and Meatlug in its amber trap.
  • Go Through Me: The riders are saved from the Death Song by Garff flying in between them and showing his adult counterpart that he's learning how to sing. That and the Death Song didn't seem to be hungry at the time.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Garff for most of the episode. The riders are also this according to the Death Song, but at least it tries to teach them.
  • It Only Works Once: Finally an example for the heroes; Hiccup makes moss earplugs for the dragons so that the Death Song can't hypnotize them anymore.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Hiccup's plan for the Death Song encounter, splitting up makes it harder for the Death Song to trap them. It fails immediately, as the Death Song gets the drop on Heather and Fishlegs before catching everyone else but Hiccup with some rapid fire amber shots.
  • Made of Iron: The Death Song uses his tail to hit Garff into a rock after being dissatisfied with his song. Although Garff is only a baby, he is left unscathed.
  • Mama Bear: With the other riders' experiences with the Death Song making them wary towards Garff, Heather is the most compassionate towards him.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: When Heather's singing calms Garff down, Hiccup realizes that Death Songs communicate via melody. The other riders' singing abilities vary in effect. Either way, they get the full grown Death Song off their backs by singing with it.
  • Musical Episode: About as close to one as a show like this can get. Justified by the trope above, especially when the riders take turns singing to Garff to train him the first time.
  • No Indoor Voice: Garff does not stop screeching for hours, leaving everyone save for Heather extremely annoyed.
  • Oh, Crap!: The riders' (except Heather) reactions when they realize they now have a baby Death Song on the Edge with them.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The Night Terrors repeatedly fly away from the plot, most likely because they're small enough for Garff to hunt.
  • Shoo the Dog: The riders have Garff leave with the Death Song, taking him off their hands. Heather specifically has to tell him to go, since he's mostly bonded with her.
  • Tail Slap: The Death Song shows its dislike of the songs taught to Garff by the riders by smacking him into a rock formation.
