Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 5 E 11 Family On The Edge

Go To

Looking to learn how to ride a dragon to find Heather, Dagur comes to the Edge, causing conflict between the riders and with Heather.

Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Hiccup and the other riders really have no excuse for falling for Viggo's trap — making the heroes believe he's up to something by staging something completely fake and ambushing them when they come in to stop it — as it's just a larger-scale version of Dagur's fake superweapon trick in "The Flight Stuff" three seasons ago. No wonder Dagur was able to see through it so easily! Partially subverted — Hiccup mentions that he had scouted out the base repeatedly over a period of several weeks. While he should have been suspicious, he had good reason to assume that it wasn't a trap.
  • Blooper: When Dagur runs into the other Dragon Riders, Snotlout is shown with them, despite the fact that he already left with Heather on reconnaissance and is later shown returning with her.
  • Call-Back: Hiccup tells everyone about the events of "Enemy of my Enemy."
  • Dead Man Writing: "Heather, if you're reading this, I guess that's bad news for me."
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: The riders consider dragons to be this, as it's the fact that Toothless and Dagur's new dragon trust him so much that prompts Hiccup and Astrid to trust him, too.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: When Heather goes outside to read Dagur's note, the weather at the Edge is very clearly stormy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Dagur discovers Hiccup's plan to attack Viggo's shipyard. Having worked with Viggo, Dagur can tell it's a trap, but the riders refuse to believe him, so Dagur launches his own attack first and triggers the trap himself, seemingly being killed in the process.
Heather: You think my brother sacrificed himself? Not with his ego. He thought he could make it.
  • He's Just Hiding: In-Universe; several of the riders point out that nobody saw what happened to Dagur, that it's strictly a case of No One Could Survive That!, so maybe...
  • I'll Kill You!: Astrid gives Dagur the you-give-me-one-reason-to-think-you-might-hurt-him-and-I'll-send-you-to-Valhalla speech.
  • Licked by the Dog: Dagur bonds extremely quickly with his dragon Shattermaster. That and the fact that Toothless lets Dagur ride him make Hiccup think he should at least try to trust Dagur.
  • Locking MacGyver in the Store Cupboard: Unable to trust Dagur not to spoil their plan, the group lock Dagur up with his dragon Shattermaster, who helps him escape. Everyone is genuinely surprised that Dagur had formed a bond with his dragon strong enough to get it to help him in such a short time.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Dagur manages to destroy the entire fleet, with only a Gronkle. It's a good thing he never became a dragon rider when he was still a bad guy (or trained a much more deadly dragon, such as the Skrill).
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "I have a message for Viggo! Tell him Dagur the Deranged says 'hello'!"
  • Redemption Equals Death: Realizing nobody has any reason to trust him, Dagur takes matters into his own hands to prove himself and dies as a result.
  • Spanner in the Works: Dagur — Viggo's plan didn't account for a former enemy of the dragon riders springing the trap prematurely and sacrificing himself for them.
  • Wham Line: Dagur's Dead Man Writing note to Heather leaves one of these:
Dagur: I didn't kill our father. When he disappeared, I let people believe that so they would think I was strong enough to be chief.
  • Your Door Was Open: Hiccup returns home to find Dagur just casually hanging out in his room.
