Recap / Dragons Riders Of Berk S 1 E 16 Defiant One

Go To

Snotlout's in a rebellious mood as the dragon riders search for missing fishermen. When Hiccup goes to find him, both riders and Toothless end up stranded on an island. Things only get From Bad to Worse when they realize they're on Outcast Island.

Tropes

  • Badass in Distress: Hiccup briefly when the Outcasts catch him making a spare connecting rod in their smithy, and forcibly start escorting him to Alvin.
  • Call-Back:
    • Remembering the other times Toothless's tail-fin has been destroyed, Hiccup's packed a spare tail-fin. He doesn't have a straight connector rod, though.
    • Alvin is still trying to train dragons the brutal way, though when his men capture Hiccup he hopes to receive more direct lessons.
    • Hiccup tames a wild Monstrous Nightmare in two minutes, just by averting his eyes, while Astrid earlier had to wrestle one by the horns to befriend it.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Tuffnut gets irritated when Stoick reveals the fishing boat made it back to Berk. When the chief glares at him, Tuff tries to blame Ruffnut for saying it.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Snotlout when Hiccup is captured. He forges an Indy Ploy to fight off the Outcast guards and uses the connector rod as an Improbable Weapon.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: Hiccup warns Snotlout not to eat the strange berries that Snotlout finds, since they can't identify them. Snotlout doesn't listen and his tongue gets swollen from the berry juices.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Snotlout admits the reason why he contradicts Hiccup's authority is because he feels emasculated by Hiccup's accomplishments.
Snotlout: "Hiccup's so smart." "Hiccup's so brave." "He killed the Red Death." "He trained the dragons." "He's got the metal-leg."
Hiccup: Metal leg?! That's bothering y-that's where you're going? Metal-leg?
Snotlout: No, it's everything the leg is attached to!
  • Improbable Weapon User: Snotlout and Hiccup with a skinny connecting rod, Snotlout especially.
  • Logical Weakness: Hiccup may be a savvy Guile Hero, but in a physical fight an Outcast can pick him up without breaking a sweat. Alvin lampshades it by calling him a "90 pound weakling".
  • The Millstone: Snotlout for most of this episode. Not only is he responsible for getting himself and Hiccup stranded, but he breaks the connecting rod that Hiccup needs for Toothless's tailfin, loses the satchel that leds the Outcasts discovering Berkians on their island, and draws Outcast fire.
  • Never My Fault: Snotlout never admits that he's the reason they're stranded on Outcast Island, and criticizes Hiccup for being unprepared for such a venture.
  • Oh, Crap!: Hiccup when he realizes that they got stranded on Outcast Island.
  • Running Gag: Alvin starts saying it's his birthday when his men find the Berkian satchel and then Hiccup on Outcast Island, confusing his men since they didn't get him a present.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The minute Hiccup gets a working connector rod into Toothless's tailfin, they soar off with Snotlout, abandoning the fight with the Outcasts.
  • Tranquil Fury: Alvin when Hiccup, Snotlout and Toothless escape at the end of the episode. He says that Hiccup will be back, even if Alvin has to drag him to Outcast Island personally.
  • We Have Ways of Making You Talk: Stated by Savage after Hiccup dished him a portion of snark. Also a moment of awesome as Hiccup did not look very concerned about this.
