Bully for You

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: At one point, Spike accidentally breaks his yo-yo and is pretty sad about it. In return, Cassie not only fixes it, but adds some bells to it. Moved by her kindness, Spike is much nicer to her from then on.
  • The Bully: Spike is this for the episode. He gets better towards the end.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Spike can be standoffish at best and rather nasty at worst, at least while he doesn't have friends. But once Cassie opens up to him by fixing his broken yo-yo, he in turn opens up and becomes a nicer dragon for it.
  • Dirty Coward: Spike has no problem stealing Cassie's basket of dragon-berries when she's not looking, and refuses to give it to her when she confronts him alone. But when she has her friends in tow, he gives it back, claiming he didn't want it.
  • Freudian Excuse: Discussed. When Cassie brings up how mean Spike is to her, Quetzel notes rather insightfully that Spike acts the way he does because it's a coping mechanism for being the new kid. While Ord may turn invisible when he's nervous, or Cassie shrinks, Spike acts mean.
  • Kick the Dog: When Cassie tries to make small talk with Spike by complimenting the "circle trick" he makes with his yo-yo, his response is to retort "It's call 'Around the World', not a 'Circle trick'." The real kick is, when Cassie tries to backpedal, he snaps "You don't know anything!"
