Just the Tropes, ma'am:

  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Businessman John Jarrett reveals the reason he left his family (for Mexico), because his family is just like Friday and Smith already had discovered. Instead of the Rockwellian family he had wanted, he had an alcoholic wife, a son who was disinterested in even acknowledging him and a daughter who was interested in sleeping around.
  • Faking the Dead: Jarrett fakes his suicide so he will no longer be a burden onto his family.
  • My Girl Is Not a Slut: Very much averted: Jarrett's daughter is exactly this, a girl who wants to sleep with (seemingly) every man in Los Angeles.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Jarrett, as to why he left his family, although viewers will be sympathetic as to why after the scenes with his wife, son and daughter.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: As Jarrett tells it, he had tried for years to have a good family life, only to have his loved ones rub it in his face. He finally lost his patience, faked a suicide note and (essentially) said goodbye ... forever.
  • Ungrateful Bastards: It can be inferred Jarrett regards his family this way ... he tries his best to provide, and he gets three A’s — alcoholism, amorality and apathy — in return.
  • Unperson: What Jarrett essentially makes himself to his family – you didn't give a damn about me in life, why should you in my death? In the postscript, viewers are told of his future after meeting with Friday and Smith: He died three years ago and he was buried anonymously in a potter's field, his family and friends never informed about his whereabouts.
