Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 1 E 12 Cyborg Patrol

Go To

With Vic captured by the Bureau of Normalcy and held at the Ant Farm, his father, Silas Stone, hatches a plan to break him out with the rest of the Doom Patrol, but everything doesn't go according to plan.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Bittersweet Ending: More or less bordering on Downer Ending. While Doom Patrol managed to free Cyborg and the rest of the prisoners and practically crippled the Bureau of Normalcy, Mr. Nobody manipulated Grid into provoking Cyborg to nearly killing his father.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: The General of the Bureau's only line of dialogue is that, no matter what Darren does, they must not upset the butts. Sure enough, the butts getting loose brings down the entire Ant Farm.
  • Driven to Suicide: The General immediately pulls out a gun when faced with the prospect of the Butts.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Or at least, managed to catch a few things that should be imprisoned, even if the Bureau's many victims certainly outnumber the army of man-eating butts.
  • Foreshadowing: Prisoner 722 overhearing Grid talking to Vic is the first time anyone has been able to hear Grid at all. Its also an indication that Grid might not even be Grid at the time.
  • It Has Been an Honor: The General's last words before shooting himself in the head.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After calling Cliff worthless scrap and demeaning his intelligence, the Bureau Scientist quickly gets crushed beneath him once Rita gets free.
  • Mood Whiplash: Only in Doom Patrol could Cyborg's extremely emotional fight with his father and Mr. Nobody's successful manipulations be preceded by the immortal line "the Butts are loose!"
  • Mythology Gag: Darren Jones' mention of having gouged out his wife's eyes over a petty detail references his comic-counterpart doing the same thing, albeit over a different thing (cooking the wrong dish for his dinner with the boss). Although here it's a indication of Darren's fanatic adherence to normalcy, while in the comic, he was just depraved and insane.
  • "No Peeking!" Request: After exiting Cliff's mouth when he is stuck to a magnet, Rita orders him to avert his eyes as she re-forms her body and puts on a uniform.
  • Oh, Crap!: Larry's reaction to the Butts getting loose. The way he says it, it's less shock or horror than it is "I always knew this was a possibility."
    Larry: Oh, shit.
  • Orifice Evacuation: Rita stows away inside Cliff's body when they infiltrate the Ant Farm, and exits through his mouth.
  • Shout-Out: In-universe: Jane mocks Agent Dirk for blatantly trying to intimidate her with torture he stole from Reservoir Dogs
  • Spanner in the Works: Karen's sudden emergence throws a wrench into the team's original escape plan.
  • Transformation Discretion Shot: Cliff is able to smuggle a liquefied Rita into the Bureau Of Normalcy via his hollow mechanical body; after he ends up getting forcibly attached to the ceiling of a holding cell, Rita exits via his mouth to land on the floor far below him, and begins audibly reshaping herself. We then cut to Cliff, and a few seconds later, we cut back to find Rita polishing off the last of her transformation with a bit of Toplessness from the Back.
  • Wham Shot: Cyborg's vicious fight with his father about the latter's actions was shocking enough... and then its immediately followed by an 8-bit Mr. Nobody showing up for The Reveal.
