Recap / Disenchantment S 5 E 4 I Hear Your Noggin But You Cant Come In

Go To

Zog, Bean and Mora break into P.T.'s Freak Show to save their loved ones, while in Dreamland Elfo, Luci and Mop Girl are relentlessly stalked by the re-animated body of Bad Bean.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: Dagmar manages to summon the headless body of Bad Bean by using the music box, Bad Bean having said she actually liked the tune.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: The Racist Antelope chooses to stay in the freak show rather than let Bean rescue him.
  • Continuity Nod: In the Steamland ride about Dreamland are caricatures of the plague doctor, Mertz's mom, and Guci.
  • Dangerous Key Fumble: When trying to free Ursula, Zog drops the keys and they fall through a hole in the floor. Bean has to use her magic to unlock the door instead.
  • The Dog Bites Back:
    • P.T.'s teenage son finally gets back at his dad for locking him in the freakshow by taking out his old man with a poop bucket and then helping Zog and Bean free all the prisoners.
    • An odd one when the dog biting back is Satan. He sees Luci going to steal Bad Bean's head and winks approvingly, rather than warning Dagmar.
  • Evil Laugh: The episode ends with Bean and Zog escaping Steamland via hot air balloon, only for Freckles to tag along, cackling maniacally as they go, a fact Zog notices.
Zog: How can there be evil laughter when we're so high up?
  • Foreshadowing: Petey yells at his father that he hopes [P.T.] will get eaten by a swamp monster. That is exactly what happens to him in the final episode.
  • Great Escape: The A-plot involves Bean, Zog and Mora freeing all the freaks from P.T.'s freak show.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When P.T. follows Zog and Bean into the Dreamland dark ride, he shoots at a devil animatronic, which causes the devil to drop its pitchfork, which in turn knocks P.T. out of his cart.
  • Human Cannonball: In an attempt to ditch Bad Bean, Elfo tricks her into climbing into a cannon and plots to have her shot into the ocean. Unfortunately the guards accidentally aim the cannon upwards so Bad Bean only ends up flying upwards—going high enough to breach Heaven—and coming back down in the same place from which she left.
  • I Don't Pay You to Think: As Turbish and Mertz ask if Dagmar has okayed tricking the reanimated corpse of her daughter's evil split personality into a lit cannon, Luci tells them she doesn't pay them to think. Turbish is confused as to whether they're paid at all.
  • Implacable Man: Bad Bean's reanimated body never stops to chase Elfo, no matter what the protagonists do to it. All their attempts to stop her only slow her down for a moment.
  • Internal Reveal: Zog learns Ursula is still alive and reunites with her.
  • It's Personal: Even before the Trogs juice her up with the Goo, Bad Bean chases after Elfo in an attempt to kill him. As Mop Girl and Luci point out, Bad Bean does have a legit reason to be angry at Elfo, since he did hand Bean the sword she used to cut off her head.
  • Kick the Dog: Dagmar takes her time pointing out how Elfo died and she was resurrected, saying everything that's happened is his fault.
  • Killed Off for Real: Jerry kicks the bucket again, this time when Bad Bean snaps his neck.
  • Late to the Realization: Zog is surprised to see Odval has three eyes, even though he's seen Odval hatless before and acknowledged it. Which, admittedly, is entirely in-character for Zog.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Freckles can be seen escaping the freakshow, something the other characters don't notice.
  • Neck Snap: Bad Bean kills Jerry by snapping his neck so hard his head is turned completely around, to God's annoyance.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Nothing stops Bad Bean. Being poisoned just makes her start shooting fire from her neck hole, being drowned doesn't work, and the running gag of the crabs fails to work on her.
  • Plot Archaeology: The plot of Elfo getting shot and killed way back in season 1 is finally brought up again, as well as the fact that it is still unknown who shot him and that this person is still out there. This leads directly into the next episode where Elfo finally tries to find out who killed him.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Jerry is pretty annoyed at dying again, and therefore isn't happy to talk to God.
    Jerry: I'm not a person, I'm a goddamned yo-yo!
  • Suddenly Voiced: Done for laughs. Through the episode Bad Bean's headless body has, naturally, been silent, save for when the gang get her to drink a bottle of beer, causing her to sigh in relief.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Elfo. While hiding from Bad Bean in Jerry's chest, he announces that it's obviously safe rather than waiting for Jerry to give the all-clear, when Bad Bean hasn't left the room.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: Luci, Mop Girl and Elfo gather a mob with torches and pitchforks to hunt down Bad Bean. It fails because somehow no-one in the mob notices Bad Bean is standing right there with them, carrying her own torch.
