Recap / Dinosaurs S 04 E 06 Terrible Twos

Go To

The Baby turns two, and Ethyl is horrified, as kids enter their terrible twos. Neither Fran or Earl remember that happening with Robbie or Charlene, which Ethyl says was so horrible they both blocked it from their memories. Sure enough, the Baby becomes a demonic child when turning two.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Annoyingly Repetitive Child: At the beginning of this episode, Baby keeps yelling at his family to bring him presents, so Fran, Robbie, and Charlene try to distract him while Earl builds him a go-kart.
  • Birthday Episode: Baby's second birthday is celebrated in this episode.
  • Book Ends: The episode is introduced by a child psychiatrist named Dr. Piaget. He returns at the end of the episode appalled by the episode's events and demands the writers answer for this, blissfully unaware that they already have.
  • Eaten Alive: Dr. Piaget gets eaten by the predator at the episode's end, after telling off the show's writers and smugly demanding their answer.
  • Enfant Terrible: While Baby was already bratty to begin with, this trope is brought into full swing in this episode. As a result of entering the terrible twos, Baby turns into an emotional, bratty, raging monster with the ability to move objects across the room, spew steam from his mouth, turn his head around 180°, and speak in a rough, gravelly voice. According to Ethyl, this happens to all children at two years of age. To further illustrate her point, Earl and Fran both have zero memories of when Robbie and Charlene were two. She chalks it up to the experience being so terrible, they blocked it out.
  • Exorcist Head: Near the end of the episode, Baby turns his head all the way around while saying his catchphrase "I'm the baby, gotta love me!" in a rather sinister tone.
  • Expy: Blarney is a parody of Barney.
  • Lies to Children: Robbie gets the idea to break Baby out of his terrible twos by celebrating his next birthday very early.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!:
    • Both the nanny and the babysitter the Sinclairs hire are quick to ditch Baby when he proves too much for them.
    • It is heavily implied to be the case with Ethyl, who disappears after the opening scene. Fran wonders where she could be during all of this later on when running out of ideas on how to deal with Baby's behavior.
  • Shoot the Television: When Baby literally bounces off the walls, Fran attempts to calm him down with a Blarney birthday video. Upon seeing it, Baby slingshots his bottle at the TV while saying, "Eat glass, Blarney!", destroying it. For added humor, Blarney actually sees Baby slingshot his bottle and screams in fear.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Toilet Humor:
    • When Baby literally bounces off the walls, Robbie asks Fran if they should do something to get him to stop. Charlene adds "Yeah, if his diaper comes loose, it's not going to be pretty."
    • When the Babysitter comes to help Earl and Fran calm Baby down, he says "I know this child well, note the scent of brimstone." Fran admits that she and Earl haven't been able to change Baby's diaper in quite a while.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Neither Earl nor Fran remember the second birthdays of their other children. Played for Laughs somewhat with Earl, as he blocked out everything between Robbie's second birthday and the morning of Baby's, then asks Fran if he missed anything in the meantime.
