Recap / DC Universe Online Episode 40

Go To

World of Flashpoint is the 40th Episode of DC Universe Online, which loosely adapts the Flashpoint Crisis Crossover event.

Summary:

Due to the actions of the Anti-Monitor during the 10th Anniversary version of Attack of the Anti-Monitor, the Flashpoint Universe has been revealed and now a prime battleground. Not only must our heroes deal with the the Flashpoint Universe's dangers - crime in Gotham, an escaped Subject Doomsday, and the ever expanding war between the Atlantians and Amazonians - they must prevent this world from falling into evil's hands...

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: This event does this to Kid Flash, Brainiac (who were only part of the Kid Flash Lost tie-in mini-series) and Jay Garrick (who had no role in the event).
  • Adapted Out: Subject One (the Flashpoint Superman) is nowhere to be seen and isn't even mentioned despite Subject Zero (Subject Doomsday) being around.
  • Awful Truth: It's revealed that The Flash is responsible for the Flashpoint Universe when he tried to go back to the past to prevent his mother's death.
  • Bad Future: "Flashtastic Voyage" is Kid Flash's nightmare which shows Central City in ruins, Gorilla Grodd at large, and the Flash Museum being changed into the Rogues Museum.
  • The Bus Came Back: Brainiac makes his return as the episode's Greater-Scope Villain since his last appearance in Amazon Fury II.
  • Darker and Edgier: The Flashpoint Batman is much deadlier than the regular Batman. Especially given the fact that he does not adhere to Thou Shall Not Kill.
  • Evil vs. Evil:
    • Emperor Aquaman's Atlantians are currently at war with Queen Diana's Amazons. Not to mention General Adam's Sci-Ops forces, making this into a Mêlée à Trois.
    • Of course the various villainous gangs in Gotham are at war with each other.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The Flashpoint Universe, created by the Flash's attempt to prevent his mother's death, has events that resulted differently:
    • That fateful encounter with Joe Chill resulted in young Bruce's death instead of his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne, resulting them becoming this universe's version of Batman and the Joker respectively.
    • Selina Kyle's time as Catwoman is much shorter as she will become this universe's version of Oracle.
    • Plastic Man, usually a hero, is a villain working alongside Heatwave.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Emperor Aquaman has a scar across his face and he's not exactly a good guy. After defeating him, he even outright states that he wants you to defeat Queen Diana to avenge Mera or die trying.
  • Hated by All: "Flashtastic Voyage" shows Kid Flash to be this as apparently he's so hated that the citizens much prefer the Rogues to him. The Flash even lampshades this asking why they citizens hate him so much, before joining the Rogues against him as well. Luckily it's All Just a Dream.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Brainiac after the initial defeats in the "Flash to the Future" raid:
"Enough data collection. Onto actual collection."
  • Inevitable Mutual Betrayal: Discussed by Kid Flash in regards to the alliance between Professor Zoom and Brainiac, stating that each had a tone in their voice that stated that they will turn against the other once their alliance is no longer useful.
  • Mirroring Factions: The female heroes and villains fighting on the side of the Amazons, as the Amazon Furies, are little different from Darkseid's Female Furies. The Amazons even mentions taking their captives for reeducation.
  • Neutral No Longer: One of the citizens you rescue from capture mentions that they weren't part of the resistance before they were captured, but now they are. Another mentions that groups like the Amazons, Atlanteans, and Sci-Ops forces are why they joined the resistance.
  • Not So Similar: The Flash is quick to find out that the Flashpoint version of Batman is not exactly like his version of Batman.
  • Selective Condemnation: Flashpoint Oracle can't believe Flashpoint Batman hasn't dealt with their version of the Joker the way he does other villains, especially given that she Would Hurt a Child. It's implied that he believes can still get through to her, but Oracle states that the woman he loved died long ago with Bruce.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: While Emperor Aquaman and Queen Diana do realize that their war against each other was due to the manipulation of their advisors, it doesn't change the fact the latter killed Mera (And is wearing her crown as a trophy) and things will never be the same as before. They mutually agree that it would be best to settle things on the battlefield with their respective troops.
  • Villain Team-Up: It is revealed that Brainiac and Professor Zoom have teamed up against The Flash.
  • Wham Line:
    Kid Flash: We did it!
The Flash: No. I did it! And I'm sick of you slowing me down!
Kid Flash: You don't... mean that do you?
The Flash: I'm doing what I should've done from the start: Joining the Rogues against you!
