This is not Jones' day at all.

Wanting to learn more about the experiments under the dome, Jones goes to question his girlfriend Zoe Kusama. To his horror though, he finds her dead with her brains bashed in.

Tropes:

  • All Crimes Are Equal: Discussed. When Tobias is asked why he put a rude comment towards Zoe in her mirror, he explains that he finds her to be a cold murderer, just like Rosamund Wilcox, which apparently she made friends with. He believes that every murder is a scum of the earth, no matter what the crime is or what led to it.
    • He explains later on, that his brother was brutally killed by a person, who was sentenced to a mental evaluation, instead of jail time, which infuriated him.
  • Best Served Cold: When Wilcox found out that Zoe was Jones' girlfriend, she made a meditated plan to get revenge from the Police Department, by befriending Zoe and getting to her head, to then mess with her in every way possible, creating fears in her, that not even Jones could take away. Her objective was to kill her through that sophisticated plan, but it was interrupted when Zoe's Killer attacked. Wilcox was just disappointed.
  • Blessed with Suck: It's revealed that the experiments on Zoe left her with telekinetic powers, and when Louis learned about it, he wanted her to go through some tests. This freaked her out though, given her trauma, and threatened to ban him from visiting her. He then killed her in a panic.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: Zoe was killed by being repeatedly hit in the head with a metal fence post.
  • The Bus Came Back: Rosamund Wilcox returns as a suspect in Zoe's murder.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When we come back to the station after finding Zoe's corpse, Gabriel informs the Chief that he will give a sedative to Jones so he could calm himself from his breakdown. At the end of the case, we see Jones swallowing an entire bottle of sedatives.
  • Cliffhanger: In chapter 3, ending with Jones taking the sedatives.
  • Cowboy Cop: Jones was about to do that, asking for the Player to indicate which "monster" killed Zoe, claiming that he will kill them with his own hands. He was stopped, falling into a breakdown.
  • Driven to Suicide: David attempts this by overdosing on sedative pills. Thankfully, the team gets him to a hospital and finds the antidote before the sedatives kill him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Jones gets this; as soon as he saw Zoe's body, he started to have a breakdown, that didn't stop even when the group came back to the precinct. This makes him unable to work on the case with you. This last for the whole case, even taking the decision to take his own life.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Jones blames himself so badly for Zoe's death, saying that he couldn't protect her and that he failed as a boyfriend and as a police officer. He had those thoughts for a while, but this event became the kicker. He decided to attempt suicide because of that guilt.
  • I Should Have Been Better: Jones says an adaptation of this phrase before taking the sedatives during the Additional Chapter, indicating that he failed both as a cop and as a boyfriend.
  • Improperly Paranoid: While the excuse could be understandable, Kai Gruber had a huge resentment toward Zoe to the point of threatening to kill her, because he thought that she was sent by "The Rose" (Rozzetta) to kill him. Just because she admitted in one of the group sessions that she was kidnapped in the dome.
  • Improvised Weapon: Louis grabbed a metal post to hit Zoe and try to keep her quiet.
  • It's All My Fault: Implied. When Jones is Driven to Suicide by the events of the case he does explain to feel worthless. And given how much he tried to keep Zoe safe and find her in the first place alone, it's no wonder that her death caused this reaction. This, combined with the several "emotional mistakes" he has caused, the feeling of guilt more powerful than ever.
  • My Greatest Failure: In this case, Zoe's death for Jones.
  • Race Against the Clock: Played with and Discussed. The team is informed that Jones took a lethal dose of sedatives, and if they can't find a way to revert the effect in time, his body will shut down and eventually die.
    • This gains a lot of emphasis when Amir tells you after administrating the antidote, that it wasn't "any time sooner". This can be implied to mean that David was actively dying, to the point that he was losing the battle, and his organs were starting to lose their function.
  • Shown Their Work: The writers of this case demonstrated their scientific accuracy when Jones took the sedatives. While we don't know the exact sedative that was taken, one of the symptoms that appear is slurred speech, quick fainting, and (confirmed by Gloria) absence of breathing. Besides that, the only antidote capable of reverting the effect (even if their use is still controversial due to the side effects) is the medication under the name of "Flumazenil", the same medication that is mentioned in the game.
  • Starts with a Suicide: The Additional Chapter of this case starts with Jones' suicide attempt.
  • Stuffed into the Fridge: The case starts when Zoe Kusama, Jones' (one of our partners) girlfriend is brutally killed, causing distress to him. The whole case goes around finding who killed her while dealing with his breakdown.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: The original reason Wilcox wanted to kill Zoe; was to make the police force (Especially Jones) be in grief.
  • The Lost Lenore: Zoe's case is a clear example. The whole case goes around her, and she becomes relevant for the rest of the game, given that she was an important asset in finding out about Ad Astra's plans and later on, about the Neohumans.
    • Also, it makes an impact on everyone in the force. A few examples are Jones, her boyfriend, who ends up attempting suicide at the end of the 3rd chapter, and he is still grieving until the end of the game; and Chief Parker, who in the last case wanted to kill Denise Daniels because of the number of people in her life that she lost, Zoe, being one of the cases.
  • The Paranoiac: Kai Gruber.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Let's see: Zoe was kidnapped for several months, during which she was experimented on with the meteor's substance, Berzellium. She ended up being the sole survivor of the experiments, seeing the rest of the kidnapped people dying and being dragged away. When she escaped, she lost all of her memories of her loved ones and took a lot of time to regain them. As soon as she regained them once she saw Dr. Vega at the dome, she got this angry impulse and killed him, explaining that he was one of the people orchestrating the experiments (which by the way, almost no one believes in her due for the severity of the accusation), and was sent to the local Psychiatric hospital. In there, her therapist (by Zoe's thoughts) overmedicated her, one of the orderlies hated her, claiming that she was a cold killer, one of the patients would threaten her, thinking that she would kill him, and the other was a serial killer who friended her and started to mentally torture her, only as a revenge plan to the Police Force (Because she was Jones' girlfriend.) And then, to top it all, she gets telekinetic powers that one person who claimed that was her friend, got interested in and tried to take her for MORE experimentation, resulting in her panicking, him panicking and leading Louis to kill her. ALL IN THE SPAN OF A YEAR. TALK ABOUT A CONGA LINE.
  • Truth in Television: More precisely, Truth in-game. An overdose can take from 1 to 3 hours to take over the body, shutting the organs down. So it doesn't help that in the game, once you find the Flumazenil to revert the sedative's effect, the game makes you wait 3 hours for Amir to analyze the thing, before administriating it to David.
    • Also, to add this up, Flumazenil is a real antidote and is the only antidote for Benzodiazepine (Sedatives) overdose.
    • Besides, it is stated that if someone's loved one is the victim, the person cannot participate in the investigation due to this becoming a personal matter.
  • Vengeance Denied: Wilcox was going to kill Zoe as part of a Vengeance to the Grimsborough PD, but her plans were interrupted when Louis killed her instead.
