Recap / Criminal Case SI Case 26 Death At A Funeral

Go To

Well, at least the coffin isn't going to waste.

The Hunters have been able to retrieve Hope from the demons, but Chief Arrow refuses to believe his late wife Lily is the Demon Queen, sending them out to a South Carolina graveyard to exhume her body. Luke, Ben, and the player are in the process of digging her up when screams ring out at the nearby funeral for businessman Larry Zarus. Upon arriving, it is revealed that Zarus has returned to life and climbed out of his coffin. Any positivity drains when another businessman, Larry's friend and partner Bernie Silverman, falls down dead with signs of poisoning.

Tropes:

  • Company Credit Card Abuse: This provides Jonathan Zarus' motive in murdering Bernie. Jonathan went on a spending spree with Larry's company credit card after Larry died in a car accident, buying things up to a sports car. Bernie, being Larry's business partner, was of course outraged by this, and demanded the money back or he'd go to the cops. Jonathan is revealed to not be the killer, so unless Larry gave him a particularly strong lecture about the thing, we can presume he got away with it.
  • Punny Name: Larry Zarus, a man who returns from the dead. Lazarus did the same thing.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Bernie was murdered by his own daughter Vickie.
  • Spanner in the Works: Larry coming back to life at his funeral was a major one to Vickie's plan to take over her father's company.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Bernie's murder was committed by his killer slipping antifreeze into pie he was eating.
  • Vehicular Sabotage: Vickie originally cut the brakes on Larry's car to kill him and her father. Only Larry died in the crash, so she arranged for Marilyn to make Bernie's favorite pie so she could poison it and finish the job. The plan also went wrong when Larry returned to life, but it's not like Vickie could have predicted that one.
