Hannah: There's been an explosion at the Mennagio! The casino's vault has been broken into!

Frank and the player rush to the Mennagio's vault to stop the heist crew before they can run off with the cash, but the only thing they manage to catch is Louis De Rico's cold, dead body leaning against a pile of money.

Tropes:

  • The Alibi: Eugenia remarks how she was so convinced the heist wouldn't take place thanks to the casino's security that she was all the way across Paradise City looking for new property, which Franks considers too convenient.
Frank: Nice alibi, sister. It would be interesting to know why you had one prepared...
  • Amicable Exes: During the Additional Investigation, Franks says he's got a date with his ex-wife.
  • Awesome by Analysis: One shared between Hannah and Russell, who manage to deduce the killer's weight by combining their talents.
Hannah: The gadget you sent me is a pretty ingenious device, <Player's Name>! It's often used by thieves when they need to rappel from a large height!
Frank: You mean like something they could use with a grappling hook? Maybe in... sewer shafts?
Hannah: Exactly! But unlike standard equipment, this baby can be programmed to support a certain weight without breaking. The last weight recorded was 150 pounds!
Frank: Great... Now we know someone on the heist crew weighs 150 pounds... I don't see how that helps.
Russell: It's a good thing Hannah called me over, considering the depth of your reflection, Frank!
Think about where <Player's Name> found this gadget! Locked in a safe! The ONLY safe that was still locked, actually!
It's obvious: the killer hid this device in the safe AFTER the others had fled, thinking nobody would look inside it until it was too late!
  • Blackmail: Louis got Freddy into the heist crew by blackmailing him with his wax dolls, saying he would destroy them if he didn't cooperate.
  • Booby Trap: The killer put ammonia and chlorine inside the filter of Louis' mask, which created chlorine gas and killed him when he wore it.
  • Call-Back: Danny Moto, Freddy Gomez, Jezebel Lopez, Papa Quansah, and Eugenia Hestentrope reappear as suspects.
  • The Caper: The main focus of the case.
  • Caper Crew: One conformed of six people.
    • The Mastermind: Louis De Rico appears to be this at first, but it's later revealed that he was actually taking orders from a sixth, still unknown person, which seems to be linked to the police department.
    • The Partner In Crime: Louis De Rico, the one who put the whole team together for the real mastermind.
    • The Hacker: Danny Moto, the one in charge of hacking the Mennagio's cameras so they could trace the best route for robbing it.
    • The Gadget Guy: Freddy Gomez, as he's the one who created the fake eyes necessary to bypass the retina scans of the casino.
    • The Distraction: Jezebel Lopez, who was in charge of invoking Distracted by the Sexy on the Mennagio guards to keep them out of the way.
    • The Muscle / The Driver: Papa Quansah performs both roles, as Louis put him on the crew in case things with the guards got physical and was also in charge of driving their get-away van.
  • Cliffhanger: The case ends with Frank escorting Danny to the police station to interrogate him about the sixth crew member, which is heavily implied to be a member of the police department.
  • Continuity Nod: Freddy Gomez had made wax dolls of Dinah Cooper, Lindsay Bannister, and Annie Capri for his next exhibition.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Papa Quansah was planning to steal all of the heist money, which would lead to him backstabbing his fellow heist crew members.
  • Damsel in Distress: Amy gets in an armed stand-off with Papa Quansah when he tries to leave the city with the money, though Frank and the player manage to save her quickly.
  • Death by Irony: Louis died by being poisoned with a gas mask.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: This was Jezebel's job as part of the heist crew, along with obtaining information from the guards. Louis even provided her with a special bra for it.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: One of the crime scenes is the heist crew's headquarters, which is a big base below the sewers of Paradise City directly connected to the Mennagio.
  • Flowery Insults: Eugenia calls Louis a "crumb bum" for robbing her casino.
  • Foreshadowing: Roxie's unusual grumpiness while delivering Louis' autopsy report hints at the fact that she and Louis had something together, which isn't revealed until the next case.
  • Gas Mask Mooks: The heist crew wore these to protect themselves against the dust of their explosion.
  • Glass Eye: Freddy's work as part of the heist crew was creating these, which were used to bypass the retina scans of the Mennagio.
  • Greed: Danny killed Louis because he wanted to keep the bigger share of the casino's loot, something Louis wouldn't give to him.
  • Heist Episode: One where the heist has already happened and now is up to you to catch the people who did it, as well as the one who killed the leader of the Caper Crew.
  • Inside Job: Hannah implies the sixth man AKA the person behind the whole heist is a member of the police force, since Louis knew about every step they took.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Danny's motivation for joining the heist crew.
Danny: But you know what? I'm... kinda glad I accepted! For the first time in my life, I was part of a team! My talents were finally being appreciated!
  • Love Hurts: Jezebel was in love with Louis and he knew it, but only used her as part of the heist crew.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": According to Danny, this was the heist team's reaction to seeing Louis die in front of them, causing them to grab as much as they could before booking it.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Roxie looks serious-faced and grumpy while delivering you the autopsy reports, something even Frank notices to be jarring.
Frank: What? No awful pun for us today? Roxie, are you feeling alright?
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: Eugenia begins to sweat when Chief Marquez asks her if she's not hiding anything from them, and we later discover that she had been using her casino vault to illegally store plutonium, which apparently has gone missing.
  • The Reveal: During the Additional Investigation, the team discovers that there was a sixth person working with the crew, and they seem to be the mastermind of the entire operation, which means Louis was just a pawn. What's worse, it's implied that this certain sixth person is a member of the police force.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The heist group wears clown masks that looks very much like the robber masks that the Joker and his "goons" wore during the opening sequence of The Dark Knight, as well as the masks in PAYDAY: The Heist. Heck, one on the image above looks exactly like the one the Joker himself wore, albeit with a different color scheme.
    • During his stand-off with Amy at the beginning of Chapter 2, Papa Quansah yells "I'll never give up! I'll never surrender!"
    • In the Vault scene, Dogs Playing Poker is seen.
    • In the Crashed Van scene, there is a sticker of the LOL face, as well as a Little Tree air freshener.
  • Slasher Smile: Danny manages to put a pretty creepy one while detailing how he killed Louis.
  • Title Drop: Twice. The first one is said by Frank while doing a recap of the events at the end of Chapter 1, and the other is said by Danny during his trial.
Frank: Jezebel Lopez was involved in the heist up to her... bra. And we all know there's no honor among thieves...

Danny: You know what they say, your Honor, there is no honor among thieves...
  • Wham Line: This one said by Danny regarding the sixth man, since it implies that there's a mole among the Pacific Bay Police Department.
Danny: Ah, so you've figured it out, <Player's Name>. Well played, I'm impressed.
Frank: Don't play your little tricks on us. Do you know their name?
Danny: Oh, I do. It's someone you know very well..
  • You Are Too Late: By the time Frank and the player arrive to the casino's vault, the heist crew has already left, leaving Louis' body behind.
