Ramirez: I'm telling you, every 50 years, the Creature comes back to the surface of the lake to take its toll!

The body of a woman named Mary Gray is found in the trunk of a submerged car, which seems to be linked to a supposed monster inhabiting the nearby lake.

Tropes:

  • Ax-Crazy: Alexander Vladinsky, the killer, is absolutely insane, which he demonstrates during his Motive Rant. See Love Makes You Crazy below.
  • Call-Back: James Savage and his dog return.
  • Fish People: The Creature of the Lake resembles one of these, green skin and all.
  • In Love with Love: Mary wanted to live her own romance story without caring for who provided it to her.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: James says this word for word when he asks if he's being interrogated just from having a dog.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: During Alexander's Motive Rant as for why he killed Mary.
Jones: I don't get it. You kept saying you loved Mary! You sent her all those romantic letters! Why did you kill her then?!
Alexander: Love, passion, murder... those are all so similar, aren't they? Murder... Murder can be the greatest form of desire.
Jones: That's... I don't even know what to reply to that. And what about the costume? If it was a crime of passion, why did you disguise yourself, uh?!
Alexander: But for the romance, of course! Can you picture it? Mary, alone, waiting for me in her white dress... The Creature, creeping up behind her, kidnapping her to take her to it's underwater lair!
Can you imagine anything more romantic? I am sure Mary would have approved!
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Ramirez, believing that Mary was killed by The Creature of the Lake who resurfaces every fifty years, tells you that its victims are always kidnapped at the outskirts of town. When you go there, you discover that Mary was indeed kidnapped where the legend says, but that's because the murderer was pretending to be The Creature of the Lake in the first place.
  • Running Gag: Once again, there's people who firmly believes the murder has supernatural origins, Ramirez included.
Jones: Great. Another loony thinking a mythical creature is a suspect in a murder investigation.
  • Scary Teeth: Floyd Russel, one of the suspects, has pointy teeth for some reason.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: The Creature of the Lake turns out to be a man wearing a costume. You can't get more Scooby-Doo than that.
  • Shaped Like Itself: The creature of the lake is called The Creature of the Lake.
  • Shout-Out: The Creature of the Lake looks like the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Mary was obsessed with finding a good man for her, so much she actually put ads in the newspaper. Too bad this led her to being targeted by a psycho.
Elizabeth: Mary wanted romance, and look where it led her!
  • Tempting Fate:
Jones: And, just saying, I still can't see any trace of that silly "Creature" Ramirez and Floyd keep talking... a... bout...
Jones: Did... did something just move over there, in the fog?
    The Lake Creature: COWER, MORTALS!
  • Trapped in a Sinking Car: The victim was killed by being stuffed in the trunk of her car which was pushed onto a lake.
  • True Love Is Boring: This is what Elizabeth, the victim's sister, thinks about love, which heavily contrasts Mary's ideals.
Elizabeth: Love is overrated, anyway. I've got money, I'm the mistress of my house, my husband provides for me! Love has got nothing to do with any of it, and yet I'm happier than my sister ever was.
  • You Didn't Ask: Floyd saw Mary being kidnapped by The Creature of the Lake but didn't manage to rescue her. When Jones questions why he hid that fact, he responds that you didn't ask.
