Songs

"The Group Mind Has Decided You're In Love" (sung by Rachel Bloom, Esther Povitsky, Donna Lynne Champlin, Michael McMillian, David Hull, Pete Gardner and cast)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of various numbers from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, e.g. "Sobbin' Women" and "Barn Raising Dance". Also heavily inspired by “The Farmer and the Cowman” from Oklahoma!
  • Shipper on Deck: Essentially a song dedicated to this. Deconstructed as well — the characters are only shipping Darryl and White Josh as a distraction from their lives, and aren't actually taking their feelings into consideration.

"I've Always Never Believed In You" (sung by Donna Lynne Champlin)

  • Damned by Faint Praise: Subverted. It's a song about how Paula was absolutely convinced that her son was going to be a total failure, and how pleased she is that he isn't one.
  • Parental Love Song: Double subverted. It sounds like Paula is coming in to have a heartwarming number about her son, and then she proceeds to totally lambast him. But in the last part, she rescinds her disapproval and tells him that she's proud of who he's become.
  • So Proud of You: The final third of the song is Paula telling Brendan that she's finally proud of him.

Tropes:

  • Plot Parallel: Both Rebecca and Paula are dealing with loved ones leaving.
  • Totally Radical: Rebecca tries to be up to date with younger millennial/Gen Z slang and fashion,to disastrous results. Valencia lampshades that she is terrible at acting young.
