Pope Urban II, Peter the Hermit, King Baldwin I of Jerusalem, Kilij Arslan I (Seljuk Sultan of Rûm), Al-Mustazhir (Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad) and Alexios I Komnenos (Byzantine emperor) speak about the First Crusade (1095-1099).

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: When asked about who hired a Hashshashin to kill a Seljuk commander after talking about said assassination, Caliph Al-Mustazhir of Baghdad looks around himself nervously and unconvincingly pretends he doesn't know who did it.
  • Catchphrase: Pope Urban II has one that doubles as a Shout-Out to the Bible: "En vérité je vous le dis..." ("Verily, I say unto thee...").
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Caliph Al-Mustazhir of Baghdad has at least two wives, and one of them gets jealous when he declamates poetry to the other and delicately feeds her grape. Al-Mustazhir then feeds the jealous wife grape, only for her to sulk and spit it out in anger.
  • Dirty Coward: Peter the Hermit is depicted as a coward who fled when his "army" of pilgrims was massacred by the Seljuks and tried to pass as a Muslim.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Sultan Kilij Arslan says his armies slaughtered the pilgrims of Peter the Hermit when they reached Anatolia, but they spared the children and sold them as slaves, because they (the Seljuks) "are not dogs".
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Baldwin tells how he and his men had to resort to cannibalism in order to survive the lack of supplies from siege to siege in the Holy Land. And he developed a taste for human flesh as a result.
  • Karmic Death: The "army" of pilgrims of Peter the Hermit massacred Jews on the way to Anatolia, and they get slaughtered (for unrelated reasons) once they reach Anatolia.
  • Laughing at Your Own Jokes: Baldwin talks about "see land and even grab land" about the Holy Land. In French, there's a rhyme with "voir du pays, et peut-être même avoir du pays". He then laughs, both because of the rhyme and because he's gleefully expecting to grab lands for himself.
  • Medieval Morons: Seljuk sultan of Rûm Kilij Arslan I, Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos and even Pope Urban II to some extent point out how stupid Peter the Hermit's pilgrims are, as they believe the Christ lived "three or four generations before them" and not over a thousand years, massacre Jews on the road to the Middle East ("Those are not Turks, guys...") and go to the Holy Land with next to nothing resembling a strong army.
  • Mission from God: Peter the Hermit pretends it is God's Will that motivates him and his pilgrims to go to the Holy Land. He then pretends he has a letter from God himself and feighs to seek it, then says he lost it.
  • Mundane Utility: In the Creative Closing Credits, the Altaïr expy uses his hidden blade to cut a crew member's duct tape.
  • Opportunistic Bastard:
    • How Baldwin is portrayed. He's upfront when saying he became a crusader so he could grab land in Palestine, and jumps at the chance of becoming King of Jerusalem after the premature death of Godefroy de Bouillon.
    • Peter the Hermit too, as he is shown lying about receiving a letter from God himself ordering him to go on a crusade. It's implied by his face's gleeful expressions and some remarks about the lands that he has other interests than just going there on a pilgrimage.
  • Running Gag: Kilij Arslan I, Alexios I Komnenos and Pope Urban II keep talking about Peter the Hermit's moronic pilgrims with the exact same words.
  • Shout-Out: A Hashshashin shows up. And his attire is inspired by, of course, Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad.
  • Vestigial Empire: Alexios I Komnenos proudly makes it clear that The Roman Empire is still there, in the form of the Greek-speaking Byzantine Empire, since only the Western part of it collapsed... though he concedes that it has lost large chunks of territory to the Muslims by this point.
