Recap / Cold Case S 6 E 16 Jackals

Go To

An ex-convict comes to the police station, asking for the team to look into the murder of his daughter Sarah Blake, who was stabbed to death in 1976 two months after he went to jail, after an inmate of his slips him a photo of her with a member of a dangerous biker gang two days before she was killed.

Tropes:

  • All Bikers are Hells Angels: Sarah fell in with a biker gang known for being dangerous thugs and drug dealers.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Sarah was ostracized by her old friends after her dad was arrested for cheating funds out of charities, which is why she turned to the biker gang, who didn’t care what her dad did.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Libby. She claims to have long since renounced the Jackals' ways, but she still is very much involved in their exploits, to the point she's almost charged with obstruction.
  • Chronic Evidence Retention Syndrome: The biker gang keeps minutes on every criminal act they do and holds on to those minutes for decades, to the benefit of the cold case detectives who eventually investigate them.
  • Missing Mom: Sarah's mother died of cancer when she was 13.
  • Murder by Inaction: When they were caught trying to run away with the drug money, Darren, the one person Sarah thought she could still trust, turned away from her and listened to her screams as the other bikers stabbed her to death.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: One of the Jackals' enforcers who's really a undercover cop has this moment when he almost "services" Sarah. He realizes that although he's (acting) just as ruthless as the rest of them, even he can't bring himself to go through with it, especially upon learning her true age and the sad reason why she joined the gang.
  • Sound-Only Death: This is one of the rare episodes where the murder is not seen, only heard: after Sarah was taken by the Jackals leader to be killed after learning that she stole the drug money from them, she is led behind a large bush where we only hear her loud and anguished screams of pain as she's being stabbed.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Sarah's father. Had he not committed the crime of stealing benefits from dead and disabled veterans, he wouldn't have been imprisoned and forced his daughter out of her old life and school where she was bullied/shunned by her classmates for what he did, she would have never become entangled with a dangerous motorcycle gang due to looking for the validation and protection that had been taken away from her, and she never would have gotten killed when she attempted to steal money from the leader to try and make a better life for herself.
