Tropes for the episode:

  • All for Nothing: Bobby decided to kill Donovan so that people would forget all about him and care more about Bobby and his own accomplishments. Unfortunately for him, with Donovan being well-liked in life, he became a legend in death. Nearly 60 years later, Bobby remains embitteredly tied to his victim.
  • Awful Wedded Life: John Donovan and his wife, leading him to seek an affair with Alice.
  • Black Dude Dies First: Donovan's friend is killed in an accident, sparking his union activism.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Donovan ended his affair with Alice by pretending to be afraid of what others would think. Really, his boss threatened to hurt her to stop Donovan from forming an union.
  • Cartwright Curse: Poor Alice lost both of the men she loved—her husband and Donovan—and in very rapid succession.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The lighter that Bobby is seen using. In one of the flashbacks, it's given as a gift to Donovan, this revealing that Bobby is his killer.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Alice named her son "Donovan" to remember John.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Bobby resolved his issues with Donovan by burying him alive as if they were in an Edgar Allan Poe short story.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Sam Bertleman, the union-busting owner of the mine that Donovan works at. While he knew about Donovan's affair to use as blackmail, he was not responsible for Donovan's murder.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Bobby killed Donovan because he was jealous of him always getting all the glory.
  • Lady Drunk: Donovan’s wife, resulting in an Awful Wedded Life for Donovan.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Donovan’s wife couldn’t get pregnant, leading to her alcoholism. Meanwhile, he got Alice pregnant after less a year of having an affair with her.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: When Donovan's friend is killed in an accident, it sparks his union activism, ultimately leading to his own death.
  • Romancing the Widow: Although Donovan was merely looking out for Alice after her husband's death and probably didn't intend for things to turn romantic.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Donovan's boss Bertleman threatens him about his union activism. Donovan scoffs at this, pointing out that if anything happened to him, no one would believe it was an accident and everyone would quickly and correctly suspect Bertleman. His boss agrees, then casually asks, "But who's going to care if some random colored woman goes missing on her way home from work?", this revealing that he's actually threatening Alice.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Alice was pregnant when Donovan ended the affair. She gave her son his surname as a first name to remember him.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Donovan and Alice. After the tragic death of her husband who was his fellow sandhog, he comforted and befriended her. They grew closer and fell in love. But he was a white married man and she was a single black woman in 1948. When Donovan’s boss blackmailed him with Alice’s safety, he broke off the affair.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Donovan, given his unhappy marriage.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Donovan’s father-in-law, Big Mac, preferred John over his own son, even promoting him over Bobby. Bobby was jealous, which led him to kill Donovan.
