Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Rudy works as a school administrator, but at home sexually abuses his own son, while running a pornographic website featuring underage boys. When he got bored of his own son, he purchased another boy to groom, and convinced him that his own parents abandoned him. It's hard to feel bad for the guy when the kidnapped boy's own father shows up and shoots him dead after bragging about his sexual appeal. His "ghost" does not appear at the end of the episode, and while the evidence box for his now-closed case was shown being put away, Vera gives it one last contemptuous smack into place on the shelf.
  • Evil Uncle: Kyle's uncle abducted him for ransom, and when that fell through, he sold him for drug money to a pedophile named Rudy. And while he did eventually try to get Kyle back, he failed and just accepted more money from Rudy. That said, he is haunted by what happened, going by his last interview with Lilly and Scotty.
  • Love Martyr: Despite years of abuse, Rudy's son still craves his father's approval.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Ken's name appears in a list of subscribers to Rudy's grooming website. It turns out that he only joined to track down Kyle's whereabouts.
  • Not Me This Time: Rudy did sexually abuse Kyle over a long period of time, but didn't kill him. Given that his son only killed him because of being sexually abused and wanting to gain his favorite status back, though, he is still responsible in a way.
  • Papa Wolf: After learning that Rudy held Kyle hostage and groomed him, Ken tracked Rudy down and killed him. Stillman also threatens the man who once raped his daughter into moving.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Ken pulled this on Rudy after finding out Rudy's role in Kyle's disappearance and subsequent grooming. The fact that his discovery took place after Kyle had already been found dead didn't help.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Somehow, Rudy thought it was a good time to brag about Kyle's sexual appeal when the boy's distraught father was pointing a gun right at him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: If Tina hadn't told her brother-in-law Ed about Ken's bearer bonds, he wouldn’t have gotten the idea to kidnap her son and sell him to people who wanted to use him for ransom money.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Rudy's son did what he could to earn Rudy's approval, but Rudy dismissed him. It only got worse when Kyle entered the scene.
