An MAC-10 that was used in a 1987 drive-by shooting which killed a little girl named Kayla Odoms is found. The team retraces the history of the gun in hopes of solving the case.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: The father of the boy who gave the murder weapon to the police had a right to be upset that his son stole his gun to trade for a new pair of sneakers. But when the boy pointed out that inadvertently giving the police a new lead in an unsolved murder was a good thing, the father made him take off the sneakers and walk home in the snow because "You're not profiting off some kid dying."
  • Bittersweet Ending: A very bitter one. The Odoms are devastated by the reveal of what happened and seeing their remaining child being arrested, while even Kayla's spirit doesn't seem to have found peace upon seeing her murder resolved and is shown to be sad and alone in the afterlife when she appears to Lilly. At the very least, Rodney seem to have finally realized that his actions indirectly lead to the death of a little girl while the team's investigations lead Eric to finally search repentance to Trudy for getting her fired when she took the MC-10 away from him to save him.
  • A Deadly Affair: The killer was trying to kill his mother's lover, but ended up killing his little sister.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: All over the place, with the same MAC-10. Two kids are playing with guns in a hallway, and an adult is horrified to learn that one of the guns is real and fully loaded. Two college kids get their hands on the gun, and decide to randomly shoot some geese. They also end up hitting a nearby horse. Most heartrendingly, the killer of the episode shot at a crowded park and not only missed his target, but also killed his little sister.
  • Ironic Echo: Darnell is told by Rodney, "You're bad now, boy" after buying the gun. Darnell then says it to himself before he attempts to kill Rodney. Turns out that he's not bad.
  • Karma Houdini: Sam is portrayed as the "good" arms dealer despite being in the same trade as Rodney, the "bad" arms dealer. He is last seen peddling firearms as usual.
  • Malaproper: Rodney likes to use big words, but he doesn't get them right. Examples include "pherecromes", "mercantiling", and "theftery".
  • Murder by Mistake: Darnell took a semi-auto to shoot at the man his mother was cheating with, but didn't know that his mother and little sister would be at that park late at night.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Darnell is shown weeping bitterly upon realizing he inadvertently shot his own sister.
  • Pet the Dog: Rodney Johnson is a loutish homewrecker who sells automatic weapons to gangbangers, but he runs three blocks to reach a payphone and call an ambulance in a vain effort to save six-year-old Kayla Odoms after she is shot, even though he doesn't learn that the shooter was really after him until years later, something which seems to trouble him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Rodney sells a sub-machine gun to a 12-year-old boy, not knowing that the same boy is planning to shoot him with the same weapon, but misses and kills his little sister instead.
