The team reopens the 2000 murder of New Haven, Connecticut prosecutor Greg Vizcaino at the request of his widow, who is set on disproving claims that he was an embezzler.

Tropes:

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Greg was nicknamed "Golden Greg" because of his combination of good looks, brains and morality.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Stacey and Greg's real killers are arrested, Greg's reputation is restored, and Antonio is finally freed after spending four years in jail, reuniting with his mother. However, Antonio was almost broken from his imprisonment and attempted suicide. Plus, Ramon is still turning tricks on the street.
  • But Not Too Black: Greg's Afro-Latino friend Kiki claims that Greg being a light-skinned Latino played a factor in why he was so popular.
  • Clear My Name: It was Greg's ex-partner who got him implicated.
  • Crime After Crime: Sal Martin coerced Antonio Mendez into falsely confessing to the rape and murder of Stacey Hall. When he learned that a male escort named Ramon had seen the real murderers and could prove Antonio innocent, Martin threatened him to keep silent as the reveal he'd coerced a confession would have likely ruined his career. When Greg Vizciano discovered the truth about all of this, Martin murdered him.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Greg's friend Kiki (played by Phil LaMarr) claims that the Kennedy Brothers were the ones who raped and killed Stacey Hall. Scotty and Jeffries assume he was talking about John and Bobby Kennedy and dismiss him as a quack, not helped by Kiki acting like a weirdo with a questionable grip on reality. When they interview Ramon, the detectives realize the Kennedys Kiki was talking about were two college boys who were nicknamed the Kennedys, not the famous politicians.
  • Dirty Cop: Sal Martin coerced Antonio into making a false confession to the murder of Stacey Hall by beating the kid and threatening his mother. He also intimidated the sole witness to the real culprits into leaving town and murdered Greg when he found evidence of Antonio's innocence.
  • Driven to Suicide: Antonio tried to hang himself when he was falsely accused of murder.
  • Fall Guy: Antonio was the first person the cops saw at the scene of the Stacey Hall murder. Between his heft, poor background and Latino heritage, he made a convenient scapegoat despite his protests that he was innocent.
  • Hypocrite: When he is exposed as a Dirty Cop, Sal Martin tries to appeal to Scotty's mercy and sense of brotherhood by invoking their shared Latino heritage. Note that Antonio, Ramon and Greg being Latino didn't stop Martin from threatening the former two and murdering the latter to protect his career.
  • Mistaken for Cheating/Mistaken for Gay: Anna and Harold assumed Greg was gay and having affairs because they caught him looking at ads in the paper for teenage male escorts. In actuality, Greg was searching for a specific escort, not for sex, but because the escort in question was a witness who could have proven Antonio's innocence.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Greg found out that Antonio was innocent and was going to clear his name, at the risk of ruining his first big case as District Attorney, and possibly his political career. Of course, doing so would have also jeopardized the career of Detective Martin, who personally arrested Antonio for the crime after goading him into confessing. To save his glorious future, Salvador stabbed Greg to keep him silent.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Nick manages to coax a confession out of Martin by pretending to be a dirty cop and playing up his drunkenness while hitting the bars with him. Unknown to Martin, Nick has a recording device on him, and the bar is staffed with undercover cops.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The real name of Stacey Hall's murderers are never revealed. They are simply referred to by their nickname, the Kennedy Brothers.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: Replace "Money" with "Political Power". When he found out Antonio was innocent, Greg was willing to save him and probably dampen his promising career and path to become Senator, not feeling it was worth it if it meant an innocent man went to prison.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Too bad his friend Detective Martin didn’t feel the same way.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: While looking into Greg Vizcaino's last days as a living man, the team comes across circumstantial evidence suggesting the beloved attorney was not as squeaky clean as the public was led to believe, such as him embezzling money to pay off a drug dealer and looking up male escorts. It turns out that it was Greg's wife who was into drugs and the reason Greg was looking for a male escort was because a particular male escort was the witness who could have acquitted Antonio.
