Recap / Clarence S 1 E 19 Lizard Day Afternoon

Go To

Clarence and Sumo chase a lizard and find unexpected rewards; Jeff jockeys for playing time on Belson's gaming system.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All for Nothing: When Belson is mesmerized by playing his game for so long, Jeff takes the opportunity to finally play his game, but ends up accidentally breaking the console in the process.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Clarence makes his last minute decision to let the lizard go and not put it in a lamp, Sumo tries to talk him out of it by reminding him that they won't get their wishes. Clarence's response makes him realize he made the right decision.
Clarence: (turns around, tearing up, voice breaking) This is my wish, Sumo. (He finally lets go, the lizard walks off, Clarence sniffles, then smiles)
Sumo: (tears up, voice breaking) Mine too…
  • Big "NO!": The last 2 scenes each get one:
    • Clarence does one when he makes a last minute decision to not put the lizard in a lamp.
    • Jeff does one when he accidentally breaks the console he spent the whole episode trying to play on.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: When Clarence calls out Jeff for angering Sumo, the latter tries to give a justified response, but gives up and just goes to Belson's house.
    • When Jeff keeps trying to demand Belson to let him play his game, the latter is shown to be mesmerized and is unable to speak for the rest of the episode.
  • Climbing Climax: In the final lizard chase scene, Clarence and Sumo somehow manage to get on the top of a building, and the former tries to climb up part of the roof to where the lizard is.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: At one point, Clarence comes up with an idea to put the lizard in a lamp (see Insane Troll Logic below for context), but when they come close to doing it, at the last second, the former can't go through with it and lets it go because he realized it was the wrong thing to do.
Clarence: I… I can't do it, Sumo. Lizards belong on the street, not in a lamp.
  • The Dog Bites Back: At the end of the episode, when Clarence and Sumo see that Jeff broke the console they wanted to play after him, they choose to leave as payback for abandoning them at the beginning and for trying to trick them into thinking that he was actually playing.
  • Food as Bribe: One of Jeff's attempts to get Belson off the console is bringing him pudding as a snack. It doesn't work.
  • Heel Realization: When Clarence and Sumo are about to put the lizard in a lamp, the former realizes how wrong it is and changes his mind at the last minute and lets it go, and when Sumo tries to talk him out of it, Clarence's Armor-Piercing Response and seeing the lizard being let go makes his heart melt.
  • Insane Troll Logic: After Clarence and Sumo find $10 in a roll of quarters while chasing the lizard, the former comes up with a theory that the lizard is a genie for leading them to unexpected rewards, so the latter comes up with an idea to put it in a lamp so they can get wishes.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After abandoning Clarence and Sumo earlier at the beginning, and trying everything he can to play his game, when he finally gets to at the end, Jeff ends up accidentally breaking the console and is abandoned by Clarence and Sumo as payback for abandoning them earlier and breaking the console.
  • Le Parkour: Sumo is shown to be very skilled at this during the lizard chase.
  • Oh, Crap!: Whenever the lizard hears or sees Clarence and Sumo, it immediately guns it. It's most horrified reaction was when Clarence grabbed it and almost put it in a lamp. Fortunately, he changes his mind at the last minute.
  • Sanity Slippage: The final scene of the episode shows that Jeff went through this as he did so many things for Belson so he could play his game, but the latter still wouldn't budge.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At the beginning, when Clarence calls Jeff out for angering Sumo, he can't think of a response, so he just decides to leave them and go to Belson's house.
  • They Have the Scent!: While chasing the lizard, Sumo tells Clarence that he can smell its fear musk.
  • With Friends Like These...: Clarence and Sumo are both on the receiving end with Jeff being the bad friend for abandoning them at the beginning and just shrugging them off at the end.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Both Jeff and the lizard get these at the end.
    • While Clarence and Sumo did change their minds about putting the lizard in a lamp, the ending shows that they put it in a milk carton instead.
    • When Jeff sees Belson mesmerized by the console, he takes the opportunity to play his game, only to accidentally break it a few seconds in, but given that he abandoned Clarence and Sumo at the beginning and how he was trying to take control of the console from Belson throughout the episode, we can't say he didn't have it coming.
