"Never Love a Goalie, Part 2" is the 17th episode of the fifth season of Cheers.

It picks up the story of the blossoming romance between Boston Bruins goalie Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas) and Carla. Eddie and Carla, it seems, are falling in love. Unfortunately, their romance has coincided with Eddie going into a terrible slump. As Eddie plays worse and worse, both Carla and the gang at the bar become convinced that Carla is a jinx.

In the B-plot, Diane's jury duty finds her in a jury room, annoying the crap out of her fellow jurors.

Tropes:

  • Funny Background Event: When the wife says "Bill... why did you have the power saw in the kitchen?" after Diane leaves, the Grands have an increasingly violent argument which Diane doesn't notice til Sam warns Diane, "It looks like he's about to fire up the old Black & Decker there."
  • Gratuitous Latin: It's Diane, so she can't just say "Love conquers all", she has to say "Amor vincit omnia."
  • The Jinx: Carla becomes convinced that she's this.
  • Jury Duty: Played for laughs, as Diane thoroughly irritates her fellow jurors. Ends in anticlimax as the wife drops the charges.
  • Loophole Abuse: Carla realises that because she’s The Jinx to Eddie, he plays badly when they’re a couple. By the end of the episode they get around this by “breaking up” before Eddie’s games and he plays well since he’s technically single.
  • Motor Mouth: In the opening scene, Diane yammers on about the trial on Sam's answering machine until she's called back into court.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Second part of a two-parter in which Carla falls in love.
  • Stock Footage: For the second episode in a row a stock clip of a Bruins game is used to show Eddie on TV.
  • Superstition Episode: Carla decides that she is the jinx that is making Eddie play badly. The Happy Ending has the two of them deciding to break up before every Bruins game, then get back together.
Barfly: Say, I was in here a couple of weeks ago. Didn't Carla and her boyfriend break up then?
Sam: Yeah. They do that before every game. It's kind of a ritual.
