Recap / Camp Camp S 1 E 11 Camporee

Go To

The Campbell Campers are forced to compete in the Lake Lilac Camporee against their rival camps, The Wood Scouts and Flower Scouts. Pikeman makes a bet with Campbell. David tries to get the kids to work together.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Gwen's reason for wanting to win the Camporee is that Pikeman has a truly disturbing interest in her.
Pikeman: Fret not, sweet Gwendolyn. Soon, the only man you'll have to worry about in your life is me...
Gwen: Oh, Jesus Christ. Campers! We are winning that fucking trophy!
  • Break the Cutie: Though the camp survives, the ending does a real number on David's spirit.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Camp Campbell wins the Camporee and is saved from joining the Wood Scouts, but that is pretty much the only good thing. None of the campers care about their victory, the only lesson learned is to not work together instead of the one on teamwork that David was pushing for, and Gwen outright says she hates the camp. Even David feels sad about camp spirit being at an all-time low.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with David musing over old photos and trying to decide where Camp Campbell went wrong. Then his eyes light up and he whispers, "Of course! The sparrow..." And then the episode abruptly ends.
  • Comically Small Bribe: Pikeman's side of The Bet with Campbell turns out to be this. If he and the Wood Scouts win then they get all of Camp Campbell's ground and campers, but if Camp Campbell wins the Wood Scouts hand over all their earnings from their yearly popcorn sales. The campers of Camp Campbell already have more to lose than to gain from this wager, but after they win Campbell gleefully reveals his winnings consisted of just $50.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: A rare instance where this proves to be useful. The Camp Campbell campers leverage their unique skillsets by setting challenges the other camps can't possibly hope to imitate.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When David looks at his old photo from when he was a camper, you'll see Jasper standing right next to a young David in front of Cameron Campbell. This not only references the fact he was revealed to be Dead All Along at the end of his debut episode, but also hints at the fact that David knew him.
  • Little Miss Badass: The Flower Scouts prove to be a lot more formidable than previously shown. Among other things, they practice poise and proper walking form on a beam over a vat of acid.
    • During her challenge (cross-species communication) Nikki barks at a wolf until it cowers in submission. She then turns around, points at the other team, and cheerfully says, "Kill!"
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: With Camp Campbell on the brink of defeat, Pikeman takes the opportunity to hit on Gwen. Her visceral disgust motivates her to rally the campers and pull back from the edge.
  • Shout-Out: When Petrol falls into the acid in the Flower Scouts' challenge, he gives a thumbs-up before he sinks completely.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: The Flower Scouts may be girly to a fault, but their lethal-looking obstacle course testifies to their badassery.
  • Tempting Fate: Every time Gwen suggests that the other teams can't possibly beat them in every challenge, we get a montage of the other teams doing exactly that.
