- Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit: Randy Pruitt and Donald Wraith set up their crime scene to make it look like Abby Fisher's father Barry killed his wife and older daughter, tried to murder Abby, and then killed himself. Thanks to their actions, Abby spent years hating her father.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Garth Fogel at least claims this. He is the biological father of Abby's older sister Hannah, but went to prison for 9 years for raping a little girl. Right before the Fisher murders, he tried to meet Hannah, but her and Abby's mother Kathy understandably refused to let him near her. When Nick interrogates him as a suspect in the murders, he claims he would never molest his own daughter, though Nick doesn't think that would turn him off from her.

- Mama Bear: Abby's mother Kathy understandably refused to let Fogel near Hannah when he tried to meet her shortly before the murders due to him being a child molester.
