"Nine Thirteen" is, of course, the 13th episode of Season 9. It is the 193rd overall and originally aired January 18, 2013.
A masked pickpocket is found dead at the bottom of a skyscraper known for mysterious deaths. Meanwhile, on her day off, Jo runs into someone with a connection to her dead sister. Danny and Lindsay get some surprising news, but they are apparently the last to know.
Tropes for the episode:
- The Bet: There's a subplot about an office bet as to when Lindsay will tell Danny she's pregnant. Sid takes the pot.
- Car Cushion: The victim falls off the 10th floor balcony onto a parked taxicab.
- Exact Words: A flashback shows the victim's panicked girlfriend racing down a sidewalk like a madwoman because he'd told her to bring him a bag of stolen jewelry "as quick as you can get it here." She gets arrested for the thefts while he goes free.
- Idiot Ball: The victim's ex-con girlfriend. In the flashback, she draws the cops' attention to herself by tearing down the street and knocking people out of her way while carrying a duffle bag. In the present, she tries to get away from Don & Jamie in a bus station by hurdling a bench with people on it. She trips and tries to break her fall by grabbing a flimsy spinning rack of paperback books. In interrogation, she tells Mac it's worth going back to prison for life because she got back at her boyfriend for sending her there in the first place.
- Lampshade Hanging: 37 previous people have died mysteriously in Building 913. At the scene, Don realizes something:Don: Hey, Sid, how come they ever only call you out for the really strange ones?Sid: They...didn't call me. But, uh, this one I was not gonna miss.
- No OSHA Compliance: The ledge on the 10th floor balcony is much too low for safety.
- No Periods, Period: Mildly averted by Lindsay being seen (by Mac as well as the audience) counting on her fingers upon leaving the ladies' room and later telling Danny (within earshot of everyone - including a triumphant Sid) that she's pregnant again.
- Railing Kill: Stabbing variation. A victim is shivved by an old enemy while on a 10th floor balcony. The assailant leaves, thinking the man is dead. He rouses, staggers over to the edge and falls over the railing to his demise.
- Side Bet: Mac and Christine have their own private bet about Lindsay's pregnancy. He calls her claiming victory after seeing Lindsay counting on her fingers and looking "perplexed," but Christine refuses to pay up until he gets her some real proof.
- Sinister Shiv: Plotting revenge while still in prison, the perp fashions a knife from a coffee cup lid and sharpens it on the concrete cell walls.
- Title Drop: Justified as it's the name and street number of the building where the victim is found.
- Visual Title Drop: The building's street number, 913, is shown attached to its facade as Sid, Don and Mac discuss some odd things which have occurred at that location.
