"Risk" is the 13th episode of Season 2, and the 36th one overall. It originally aired January 25, 2006.

Synopsis:

On the way home after a double shift, Danny spies a body on the subway tracks. Meanwhile, a stockbroker is found dangling from his 40th floor office window. Is it suicide or murder?

Tropes for the episode:

  • At the Opera Tonight: Lindsay shows up to the subway scene in a formal dress since she was at the opera when she got the call.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Mac arrives at the subway scene in a tux, having been called away from the Mayor's benefit event. Danny, who was first on scene, is wearing civvies and feels underdressed.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: Stella and Flack question a suspect who is feeding pigeons while standing up through the sunroof of his limo. They need his handkerchief for evidence and ask him to explain a large stain on it. He says the birds gave something back to him. A reference is made to that being considered good luck. (See season 7's "Food for Thought" for a Call-Back to this idea.)
  • Coolest Club Ever: After finding some Beta fish amid one victim's stomach contents, Adam is flabbergasted that Mac is familiar with such "a very hip, very salacious Manhattan club" as the one referred to, "Wild, Wild Wet."
Mac: The bar's over on Broadway near Chelsea University, Fighting Fish on every table. It's a short train ride from where Randy Williams was found.
Adam: [impressed] Ah you're the man, you can hang anywhere you want, huh?
Mac: I was at the scene of a crime, Adam. The bouncers went a little overboard, ended up killing some kid from Staten Island. [pauses, then grins] The shrimp cocktail was *fantastic*.
  • Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?: Flack and Stella interview a suspect whom they know from surveillance video has a green handkerchief, which they think was used to suffocate a victim. Flack asks the man, "What's that bulge in your pocket? And don't get cute!" The guy pulls out the hankie and gives it to them.
  • Plot-Powered Stamina: Danny goes back to work to help with the case. Guess he caught Married to the Job syndrome from his superiors.
  • Sinister Subway: It's night and the subway is dimly lit. Danny just barely succeeds in having the train stopped before the body is run over.
  • Vorpal Pillow: The first victim's killer smothered him with a pillow from his office couch while he was napping, then fashioned a noose and threw him out the window to make it look like suicide.
