"Rain" is the seventh episode of Season 1. It originally aired November 17, 2004.

Synopsis:

A bank vault is broken into, but two of the robbers die before escaping. Unfortunately, rain washes away much of the evidence.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Bank Robbery: The robbers use explosives to open several safe-deposit boxes and steal valuables from them.
  • Bloody Handprint: One of the robbers is found in a pool of blood with baby-size prints leading away from his body.
  • Buffy Speak: Stella finds "something gooey" on the first victim's face. Mac snarks, "Gooey. That's a nice forensics word; we should use it more often."
  • The Convenient Store Next Door: The investigation reveals that the perps had drilled a hole beneath the crash bar on the back door of the adjacent, empty storefront, used an umbrella to pry it open, camped out until closing time and broke through the wall. Danny comments on the flimsiness of the metal the vault is constructed of, saying he has the same stuff on the front of his dishwasher.
  • Improvised Umbrella: While the team are waiting for ransom money to be picked up from a newspaper box, a woman buys a paper from it to shield herself from the rain.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: The bank robbers wear full-faced masks to conceal their identities.
  • Spanner in the Works: The robbers' plan starts to go awry because of the rain; it's an inside job but another employee doesn't leave at closing because he's waiting for the rain to slack off.
  • Title Drop: Kinda hard to write a script in which rain plays an important part without using the actual word.
