While Mr. Grouper is at a dentist appointment, Mr. Grumpfish fills in for him. Problems arise when this grouchy substitute teacher claims he does not like anything. So, the Bubble Guppies recap on the best songs from Season 1 and show him that there are things to like.

This episode includes examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
Mr. Grouper: I think Mr. Grumpfish likes you guys!
Mr. Grumpfish: Like them? …I LOVE these guys!
  • Clip Show: Clips of the Bubble Guppies' songs from Season 1 play throughout the episode.
  • Educational Song: “Long Time Ago” from “Can You Dig It?” which teaches about dinosaurs, “Got a Bunch of Bones” from “Call a Clambulance!” which teaches about bones, and “Sun, Beautiful Sun” from “The Moon Rocks!” which teaches about the solar system.
  • Foreshadowing: Early in the episode, Mr. Grumpfish is shown reading a book about dinosaurs. Later, Noni pretending to dig for dinosaur fossils is the only thing Mr. Grumpfish seems even remotely interested in.
  • Group Hug: When Mr. Group comes back from his appointment, the kids all run up to hug him.
  • List Song: “Super, Supermarket” from “Bubble Bites!” which lists all the different things you can buy at a supermarket and “A Color Just Right” from “The Crayon Prix” which lists various colors.
  • Musical Episode: While a typical episode has 2-3 songs in it at most, this episode has 8 and the songs are used as a plot device to try to show Mr. Grumpfish what he’s missing out on by being so stubborn about his many dislikes.
  • Musical Number Annoyance: Each time the Guppies want to teach Mr. Grumpfish about something, they say “Let’s sing about it!”. Mr. Grumpfish quickly catches on to this, and the next time they introduce him to a new topic he asks in his grumpy way “Are you gonna sing about it?”. They do.
  • Out Sick: Since Mr. Grouper is out at a dentist appointment, Mr. Grumpfish fills in as the Guppies’ substitute teacher.
  • Parrot Expo What: When Mr. Grumpfish tells the class that he’s their substitute teacher, Deema says “Substi-what?”.
    • Mr. Grumpfish also does this later in the episode when Noni tells him about dinosaur fossils and he asks, “Dinosaur what?”.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Mr. Grumpfish doesn’t like rain because it’s too wet and colors because they’re too colorful.
