Tropes seen in this episode:

  • I Have No Son!: Ganns' hatred to the point he wants all Native Americans exterminated grew from his own son falling in love with a Paiute, and a member of a tribe who was engaged in a land battle with the white man (led by Ganns). Upon learning he had married the young maiden, Binns kills both his son and his (now-pregnant) wife.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Ganns and his henchmen pose as reporters from a St. Louis, Mo., newspaper, and hide the parts of the Gatling gun (which they stole) in crates marked "camera equipment."
  • Multiple Gunshot Death: A Gatling gun that can shoot several hundred rounds per minute, and several hundred people at the peace treaty signing equals sure bloodshed and mass deaths. Averted, however, as Little Joe bursts in to stop Ganns – and he needs only two shots to fatally wound him.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: During the hoopla and pomp and circumstance, Jamie and newspaper publisher Sam Dawson talk about the events and what's led up to the treaty signing, wherein the white man is giving back large portions of land to the Paiutes. While certainly happy and proud that his father had a key role in brokering the treaty, Jamie suggests that this was more a case of self-congratulatory excess on the part of the white man rather than an attempt to make true peace with the red man and that the land was really the Paiutes in the first place.
