Recap / Bojack Horseman S 3 E 05 Love And Backslash Or Marriage

Go To

This episode contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: When Todd is asked if he is an actor, he mentions that he narrated a Mazda commercial once. Aaron Paul did in fact narrate a Mazda ad. Take a listen.
  • Bathroom Stall of Angst: Taneisha hides and cries in a stall after calling off her marriage with Karen. BoJack follows her and consoles her with a speech in the bathroom.
  • Curse Cut Short: Upon discovering that she's pregnant, Diane exclaims "MOTHERF-" before we Smash Cut to the credits.
  • Dramatically Delayed Drug: Diane gets invited to an elite party with Alex Brosefino and the famous "Snatch Batch" and takes a party drug called "gush." She expects the effects to kick in right away, only for the Snatch Batch to inform her it takes a few minutes. Numerous scene changes go by, after which Diane gradually realizes she was invited by accident, as Alex thought she was his "cool and sexy" friend named Diane, but when she tries to confront him about this, the drug finally kicks in and she begins tripping balls. The trip lasts all the way home, allowing her to deliver Mr. Peanutbutter an honest drug-induced rant about how she loves him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Emily positively gushes to BoJack about how much she enjoys The BoJack Horseman Show, not because she thinks it's funny but because she thinks it's hilariously awful. Understandably, BoJack doesn't take this as a compliment. invoked
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The episode ends on a Curse Cut Short, as actually letting Diane say "motherfucker" would've cost the season it's one f-bomb.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though it ultimately backfires, Bojack giving Todd the key to a room for the purpose of bedding Emily is actually one of Bojack's more supportive moments.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Diane tries hallucinogenic drugs for the first time. She takes it, the music starts up, and she prepares for the hit... only for the other party goers to inform her that it's going to take a while to kick in.
    • Diane, under the influence of drugs, tries to carry Mr. Peanutbutter. She breaks her arm.
  • Wedding Episode: In this episode, BoJack crashes a wedding rehearsal dinner (with much Insistent Terminology specifying that it isn't the actual wedding), and inadvertently causes one of the brides to get cold feet and run off.
  • Wham Line: Diane's doctor drops a line that becomes the focus of the next episode's plot:
Doctor: Well, your blood work looks good. So go home. Oh, and, uh, lay off the drugs. Especially now.
    Diane: Why especially now?
Doctor: Oh, don't worry. Your baby's fine.

Cool Sexy Diane

Diane was invited to a party by superstar Alexi Brosefino, but it's not until the drugs she took kick in that she realizes he only invited her by mistake.

How well does it match the trope?
