Recap / Bluey Dragon

Go To

The family draw out a fantasy adventure where they go looking for a dragon, but Bluey is having trouble with drawing a dragon fit for the family.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Humpty Dumpty is made into a monster that tries to eat the heroes.
  • Art-Style Clash: Each family member's character during the fantasy adventure has their own unique art style, which is based on their age and artistic talent.
  • Character Development:
    • Bluey starts out worried about drawing and usually chickens out on any opportunity to add to the story with her own drawing style. But then she hears about her parents' backstories concerning what influenced their drawing styles. This leads to her realizing that she needs to practice her own skills. Afterwards, she summons the courage to give the adventure its conclusion by finally drawing the dragon.
    • Similarly, Bandit reveals that he loved to draw cars when he was young, but a classmate's insensitive remark about his drawing skills made him give it up. After Bluey gets over her own insecurities about her artistic skills and finally draws a dragon, Bandit is inspired to draw a racecar for the first time in years so the Heelers can escape from the dragon's cave.
  • Chekhov's Gun: During his memory spell, Bandit mentions that he used to love drawing cars as a boy. Then to escape the collapsing cave, Bandit draws a racecar to help everyone escape.
  • Deep-Immersion Gaming: While not a traditional tabletop or video game, the Heeler's fantasy adventure mainly depicts each member as the characters they drew to represent themselves, complete with different art styles.
  • Dragon Hoard: The dragon resides in a cave of full of treasure and wonders. The adventurers take some of the treasure after completing their quest.
  • Foil: Chilli and Bandit's backstories are about how they each loved drawing when they were children, and were dissatisfied with how it wasn't perfect. However, the conclusion of their story differs, showing Bluey two different paths to her drawing skills. On one hand, Bandit allowed a classmate's criticism to discourage him from drawing ever again. His drawing skills grew rusty, making him the example of what could happen if Bluey gives up. By contrast, Chilli received constructive criticism from her own mother, who encouraged Chilli by telling her that while her drawings may not be as good as she wishes, she has potential if she keeps going. As such, Chilli's artistic skills grew and flourished, representing what Bluey can potentially become if she keeps practicing.
  • Forced Transformation: The Blue Fairy defeats the dragon by turning him into a purse.
  • Hidden Depths: In this episode, it's revealed that Chilli is a skilled artist, and her drawings are easily the best out of all the Heelers. This is thanks to her mother encouraging her to get better at drawing when she was Bluey's age.
  • I Meant to Do That: After his wife compliments his donkey, Bandit quickly asserts that he meant to draw that instead of a horse.
  • Memory Jar: Chili convinces Bluey to use a memory spell on her and dad so she can show them their past experiences when it came to drawing.
    • Bandit remembers how he used to love drawing cars but stopped after he kept getting criticisms from a classmate.
    • Chili remembers how she also struggled to draw horses but her mother motivated her to keep on trying.
  • Missing Mom: Chili's mother is all but stated to be dead as Bluey doesn't recognize her and her last scene has her "letting go" of her Pegasus.
  • Oh, Crap!: Chili gets this reaction when Bingo is given free reign to draw the Wisest Tree in the Forest.
  • RPG Episode: The theme of this episode; the game the Heelers play is essentially a very simple Tabletop RPG, where each family member fits a fantasy role (Bluey as a fairy, Bandit as a barbarian, Chili as an elf warrior, and Bingo as a racecar driver) and they all go on an adventure to find a dragon.
  • Rule of Symbolism: In the last scene, Chili realizes that she has to let go of her Pegasus and gives a soft goodbye to her. Given that her mother inspired her to keep on drawing to improve her horses, it's all but stated that this was her way of making peace with her passing.
  • Running Gag: Bandit keeps complaining about his itchy loincloth.
  • Terrible Artist: Downplayed with Bandit. His art style is about on the same level as Bluey's and his drawings slightly more prone to being mistaken for something else. He attributes this to having been teased about his drawings at a young age and giving up on learning, so he encourages Bluey to keep working so she can grow beyond him.
  • When Trees Attack: Courtesy of Eccentric Artist Bingo, the Wise Old Tree turns into a goofy opponent that captures the family in its large branches.
  • Wise Tree: When searching for the dragon, the Heelers decide to ask the Wise Old Tree for help, but Chilli wants to take a break from drawing trees since she just drew an entire forest. The trope is then subverted when Bingo draws the Wise Old Tree as a goofy character who grabs the Heelers in its branches.
